The Sheldon Community seeks to appoint an experienced all-rounder to this new post. The successful applicant will have good people and IT skills to manage Reception and many aspects of the charity’s administration.This is an exciting opportunity to contribute at the heart of the administration team of a high quality retreat and education centre. Sheldon is run by a Community which has a specialist ministry with a national reputation. Applicants can be considered for Community membership or for a salaried, non-residential post.

People Skills and Qualities for Reception and Telephone
The postholder will have a front line role staffing Sheldon's Reception and answering the telephone.

  • Mature, unflappable, and enjoys the multi-tasking variety of front desk work
  • Friendly, calm and kind with a genuine commitment to ensuring the needs of guests and enquirers are met within the context of the organisation
  • Reliable, accurate on detail and works well as a member of a team
  • Sensitivity and accuracy in ascertaining the needs (and state of mind) of enquirers on the telephone or in Reception. Gather information quickly and take appropriate resolving, holding, or passing on actions. Implementing firm boundaries with unwanted or inappropriate callers. Maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Training, supervision and support of Reception volunteers

Technical and IT skills
The postholder will be able to demonstrate a track record of skills in a good range of the areas listed below. He or she does not need to come to the job already fully trained in all of them, but should bring clear evidence of a range of proficiencies and of the capacity to learn.

  • organising/managing/administering within a small to medium size team, including designing, refining and implementing workable systems
  • practical day to day management and trouble-shooting of computers using manuals, forums, helplines etc (We have a Microsoft small business server with laptops and workstations)
  • proficiency in either or both Microsoft Office Professional (including Access) and Adobe Creative Suite (print and web design)
  • ability to learn new computer software programmes and train other team members
  • ability to research a project or problem, organise information and present it concisely
  • ability to prioritise workload and keep track of tasks in liaison with line manager
  • high quality copy writing for promotions, fundraising, publicity, thankyous, etc
  • researching avenues for promoting charity’s resources.
  • design and creation of display and publicity materials
  • updating and development of website and online shop

Job details
This post can be considered either as a salaried post, or for a resident Community member:

  • For a Community member, single or married quarters are available. When considering a married couple, we would be looking for both people to be working members of the Community. There are a range of other potential posts, especially in Housekeeping and Maintenance teams that we would be pleased to explore with potential applicants.
  • For a salaried staff member who lives locally, our ideal would be 4 days per week 8.30am to 5.30pm, but 3 or 5 days could be considered. Sheldon is in a rural area, so own transport is essential.
