| Thank you for your matchless hospitality and all that Sheldon offers. It's like a little corner of heaven on earth and I return to the fray once more refreshed and renewed. God bless you always and may that which you give to others be returned to you ten thousand fold. |
| |
| To all those whose faces have smiled a welcome or who have been behind the scenes lovingly paying attention to all the thousands of little details that ahve made this past week such a very special time (any my husband whose birthday gift to me it has been) ... thank you all and God bless you so much!!! When I first visited Sheldon in 2000 with the family I don't think I really had a clue what this place is allabout and the depth of the vision God has given you and the amazing ways, both visible and invisible, in which He has been enabling you all to fulfil it. Spending some time readin he at Pigeon Flies this week has really opened my eyes and heart and made me want to say "yes, yes, yes! and Amen!" It's been wonderful to be on the receiving end of such grace and generosity this week - I'm going home with much to continue to pray and process and rejoice in, but leaving a little of my heart behind with you all. I'll be back! Much love and thank you again. |

| Thank you for fitting me in when I had confused my
booking.
This week has been a great time of refreshing. It was my
first time at Sheldon. I think your facilities are
excellent and can't think of any way that the service
could be improved - except perhaps for a log fire. I was
directed to the Nobody Inn for that. |

| ... with our thanks for a very helpful and restful week. It had (and still is to some extent) been a stressful and tense time but [my husband's] session with Carl was tremendously helpful and has helped him to see things more clearly for the future, though there is still much uncertainty. Thank you ALL very very much indeed for all the love and care that one feels at Sheldon. It is truly a wonderful place. |
| |
| We both want to thank you for such a restful and refreshing time in Thomas' Lodge, and for laying on such good weather this last weekend!! We so appreciated your welcome and the attention to every detail including some most delicious food stocked in our fridge. We also valued having the extra few hours on Monday, especially as we were not able to arrive until late Friday. Our family were so impressed with Sheldon, and for a short time savoured the atmosphere and enjoyed a walk around the site. The appearance of a roe deer and fawn on the grass above the theatre gave quite a thrill to the girls who were quite near at the time. I am sure that we will come together again -possibly for the same bank holiday weekend next year. |

| As before my visit was very helpful with lovely quiet unobtrusive friendship and support. Thank you and bless you for your good work. P.S. Are the outside lights left on overnight entirely necessary? [Webeditor - we've considered all sorts of options for safety and comfort and so far the answer is yes] |

| My stay was helpful/enjoyable because of the superb, unobtrusive care which made the stay very easy. One to one time was very helpful too. Everyone was very friendly and made me welcome. Sheldon is indeed a gift to the church. Thank you. |
| |
| Sheldon is a place I can just come and be me and not have to worry about everybody else. No phones, e-mails, people wanting you for this or that – wonderful! It was also good just to talk with Sarah knowing that it is a safe place to voice concerns/stuff that might seem daft to others. I would have found my stay at Sheldon more helpful if the little lights outside went off so that it wasn’t light in the bedroom. (Not really important but it is so rare one finds oneself in pitch darkness. I find it quite a blessing). [Webeditor: we're working on this one - trying to provide light where & when needed and not when not!] |
| |
I just wanted to thank you for making space for me over the weekend. I am feeling much rested from the tensions here even if only for a short space. ... One thing that I do find at Sheldon that with no expectations put on me it allows me to relax, forget for a moment my struggles, then to look at them peacefully and within a place that exudes loving care. I feel my future is changing in lots of ways, not sure how but I keep praying that the God whom I love will help me trust again. |
| |
| It was a really peaceful, safe, caring environment, well equipped, clean and warm, well organised accommodation. Lovely sanctuary and wonderful grounds. Thank you! |
| |
The stocked larder was delicious and generous; the Lodge was beautiful – well furnished and appointed, with meticulous attention to detail; surroundings/walks quiet and extremely attractive; staff unobtrusive, but there if needed; there was an atmosphere of peace and being cared for.
As always, we found Sheldon a place of refreshment, renewal and peace. A place to “be”. We especially valued the unobtrusive care of the Sheldon community – and the pre-cooked meals were totally delicious! Thanks again – for all your love and support. |

| Every care has been taken to make our stay comfortable, peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable. The attention to detail in the lodge is particularly impressive. I also love spending time in the chapels and the grounds. The library is an amazing resource; both the books and the DVDs have enhanced our stay. We were made to feel very welcome, but yet there is no obligation to be sociable. There is real freedom to ‘be’ and to find stillness. We would have found our stay at Sheldon more useful etc.. neither of us can think of a single thing! |
| |
Thanks you so much for your very timely pastoral care. Sheldon certainly is a gift to the church and I shall never forget the wonderful ministry expressed by all the Sheldon team. May God continue to bless you. |
| |
| I found my stay helpful/enjoyable because of time and space to be quiet, read, pray and to have a good transitional point between posts. Always good. Thank you! |
| |
| In a very comfortable environment I was able to enjoy being myself with no demands from phone, work, family or others with fantastic weather. I was able to walk along rivers and beside the sea enjoying God’s wonderful creation with no constraints any time. Thank you. |
| |
| I arrived at Clare’s Lodge feeling almost incoherent with tiredness, which gradually melted away under the influence of Sheldon peace. People write that this is a ‘safe’ place in which to be, and it really is just that. Somewhere to let down your guard and let God in. The quiet and unobtrusive professionalism of the community and staff make all this possible, and I guess that it doesn’t come without a good deal of thought and effort; thank you so much for being there. The immaculate lodge, the delicious food, the walks, the massage and finally, the new-born lambs all made my stay a healing experience. Thank you. But where were the buzzards? |
| |
| A most enjoyable and restful visit – my first to the Linhay. The food was excellent, the gluten/dairy free provision surpassed my expectations – thank you! Because I was leaving early in the morning I had to relinquish my lodge key – so the deposit could be returned the previous afternoon. I realize this system has probably been developed as a result of people inadvertently taking their keys home with them – but I would have felt happier retaining my key for my final night and leaving it in the lodge on my departure. [Webeditor: Not quite sure we understand this. The Lodges lock from the inside without the need for a key. In practice most guests don't use a key at all.] |
| |
| (i) the welcome, facilities, staff, Linhay lodge, gardens, “sanctuary”, chapels, prayerful ambience were “faultless”!! (ii) it was the perfect place to relax, read, pray, unwind and meet with God. (iii) it allowed us to spend time with each other in an environment that was peaceful and beautiful. Thank you to you all. God Bless. |
| |
| ... restorative because of the great care shown by the quality of the accommodation and the quiet presence of the community. The beauty of the surroundings allows for real space without feeling alone. I value the simplicity of the prayer times, and the genuine sense of freedom to set my own pace without expectations. I can’t think of anything else I could have needed. |

I needed a thorough break from all ministerial duties and other pressures. This you provided, excellently. I value your attention to detail. In my wonderfully comfortable lodge, I also had access to a washing machine (rare, and invaluable) and views of birds feeding on the stocked-up feeder. One-to-one meetings and the jacuzzi and massage were all therapeutic. You were all also very helpful when I had car worries. Thank you. This is a special, graced place. However, I missed praying the psalms in community/ communal prayers. The psalms surely form the book in the Bible which most help us all ‘keep it real’. Not just me, but many of your guests will need to pray them, and my sense is that you as a community can be alongside us in that. I think the instructions about what and how to recycle could have been clearer – in part because, very regrettably, other people often use ‘i.e.’ to mean ‘e.g.' |
| |
| We were made to feel very welcome when we first arrived. We were able to ‘do’ our own thing. Time just to ‘be’ with each other and with God. The food was wonderful, very nourishing and interesting too, with some treats too. A wonderful variety to choose from. A comfortable place to stay. Thank you! |
| |
| We found our lodge very comfortable and peaceful, enabling us to relax quickly into our stay. We enjoyed the peacefulness and gentle spirituality of morning prayer and the evening reading. All the staff were welcoming, helpful and quietly available. The setting is stunning – we need to visit at another season. Altogether a lovely place to take a retreat! We would have found our stay more helpful if we could have stayed longer! Thanks. |
| |
| Excellent accommodation, welcome, kindness and care. If would have found my stay more enjoyable if I had asked about local church services for Holy Communion on Sunday and if I had come in summer. |
| |
| A really good chilling time, with all our ‘creative comforts’ need met in a splendid way! The professional counselling approach was just what I needed. I gained a lot of reassurance; medical questions answered and practical help given for a strategy and way forward out of a very stressful recent past. It’s early days, but by God’s Grace things are going well so far! Many thanks! |
| |
Thank you for your recent email outlining some of your interesting programs. Very tempting, as always.
I don't know if you remember me, but I stayed with you [a few years ago] I was recovering from a severe spiritual attack/psychotic episode/depression. At that time Sheldon was a true sanctuary for me and was where my healing began. I think of you often with gratitude for the help I received at such a desperate time.
I am writing to let you know that I am now fully recovered (although I'll be on an anti-depressant for a while yet). I still shake my head in wonder that I'm not a babbling wreck living out my days in a mental institution. But God is good and obviously has other plans. I was able to return to ministry and to finish off my Curacy ...
Anyway, you saw me at my worst and I just wanted to share with you that God continues to work miracles and has put me back together again.
|
| |
| Sheldon works a very therapeutic and Godly magic on us, and we know that's the result of great care and carefulness on the part of the community and staff. We both keep calling up the memory of it as mental escape-hatch when things here get over-demanding. |
| |
My stay was helpful because of the caring environment, feeling completely at home, the peace and quiet. The deer I saw on the lane, the welcome, the food, the talks with Carl. It would have been better if it was longer! But….’this world is ever near’. |
| |
| Thank you for all that you have done and are doing at Sheldon. Thank you so much for putting me back together and for helping me realize that I wasn't a failure and the only one to seemingly fall apart. |
| |
It gave me space to think and pray, to relax and read and work without any worries at all. |
| |
Beautiful location, comfortable quarters, excellent food and lots of it! Comfortable and quiet library. Very restorative.
It would have been more enjoyable if… I enjoyed being left alone, but would also have welcomed just a little human contact. Perhaps a little too much emphasis on not intruding on others, makes for an artificial social ‘cordon-solitaire’. Why not at least share the Peace at the Eucharist? [Webeditor: not sharing the peace at the Eucharist has proved essential in enabling people to attend who are feeling fragile. We do advise people who want social contact to come on a programme event instead.] |
| |
A little card sent with my sincerest thanks to you all for your love, care and generosity. I have been so blessed by your kindness for which I am truly grateful.
May the Lord richly bless you all as you continue to bless the lives of others. |
| |
| To Sarah and all at Sheldon. Thank you all so much for a really helpful and inspiring retreat. I felt very different at the end of it, and (almost) glad to be back in the parish. Your hospitality was wonderful; I will commend it, and hope to return. May God bless you. |
| |
To all at Sheldon. My stay with you here has been so timely and strikes me as a real God-incident. I found you through a web search!
It has been such a beautifully, caring, luxurious, quiet prayerful place to be. I am so grateful for your unobtrusive care and magnificent attention to detail in food, lodges and much more.
It has been a treat and immensely helpful to have Carl’s accepting, listening ear.
The right place and right people at the right time. Thank you! |
| |
| Thank you so much for your care this week and especially for providing me with low cholesterol alternatives that were so good. It is all very much appreciated – as is the total “Sheldon Experience”. Thank you – God bless |

... the sensitivity and kindness of the Community members, the rare and wonderful opportunity to be quiet and to pace myself, the peacefulness and beauty of the surroundings, the feeling of being away on my own yet feeling safe and secure. Thank you all so much.
|
| |
I appreciated the peace and beauty of the setting and surroundings; the attractive planting of the borders; thoughtful siting of seats; the simplicity and creative ordering of the chapels (old and new) and the sanctuary; the generous and thoughtful provision in my lodge (larder stocked with particularly delicious home-made soups); the tea-tray and vase of sweet-smelling flowers to welcome me! |
| |
My stay gave me space and permission to rest, sleep, and just ‘be’. I had uninterrupted time to read, pray and reflect without a phone ringing or a job taunting me. I guess with good time management and perspective it should not be necessary to come away to do these things – but necessary it is! And I am grateful again for the place, the people and the days well spent. It would have been better if I could have had longer to be here! |
| |
| These few days have been exactly what I needed. The silence was warm and welcoming; I valued the space to do what I wanted when I wanted. The home made soups were delicious. The massage and 1:1 were very helpful. |
| |
. . . the balance between time spent by myself and opportunity for one to one was just right; chance for one to one with someone outside my home situation was a gift; the Sanctuary, Thomas lodge and the surrounding countryside provided safety, beauty and healing. The balance between careful, hospitable care of guests and respecting the need for space was just what I needed. The food was excellent and I loved the fresh garden veg. Thank you!
Do you know about Ecover cleaning products? (I’m not advertising!). They are environmentally friendly products and I am always glad when I see them being used. |
| |
My stay in Thomas Lodge was lovely. It was remarkably peaceful and quiet on our side of the site, despite the presence of family holiday guests on the other side. The silence, beauty and good food were very restorative. |
| |
During my stay I was welcomed warmly, handled with great respect and able to find masses of spiritual, emotional and physical space to reflect restore and refocus. Thank you. It was a very sacred time for me. |
| |
I found my stay to be just what I needed because I was left to get on and ‘be’; Stephens Lodge was clean and spacious; the food was all the goodness of home cooked food without the stress of having to make it! The Sanctuary really was one; the private garden was a haven to rest, read and relax away from others; the well positioned benches around the estate gave breathtaking backdrops to sit and talk with the creator;
I’ve never enjoyed silence so much. |
| |
Please pass on my thanks to the wonderful cooks among you, it really was delicious food. Please heartedly thank the housekeeping team for all their hard work washing and cleaning – thank you especially for the thoughtful touch of flowers in the lodge when I arrived. Thanks too to the team that keep the gardens so well and attend to the estate. You do an incredible job. Thank you to everyone else for your hard work and prayers. |
| |
First time in Clare’s Lodge (April 05 at a programme in the Long Barn) comfortable and relaxing. Glad to use old chapel and map for walks.
…. minor suggestion – have a cover for plug in bath to catch hair – I think I pulled most of my hair out of the drain but…. |

| Warm and friendly welcome and orientation; very comfortable accommodation with everything I needed either in the lodge or close at hand; no pressure, but knowledge that help was at hand if needed; lovely walks; enjoyed the variety of birds coming to feed on the peanuts; even the cats were caring!; good food in generous helpings; the massage was wonderfully relaxing; one-to-one time helped in my decision-making. There really was nothing that could have been improved! For my needs over those few days it was perfect. |
| |
| The whole experience was wonderful and met our needs in every way. The arrangements could not have been better – absolutely perfect! Thank you so much. |
| |
| My stay at Sheldon provided a safe and loving environment in which to recover from a particularly stressful time and recharge my batteries. |
| |
The level of hospitality is very thoughtful without being ‘claustrophobic’ in any way – so appreciated after being face to face with so many people day in day out. Thanks for everything Sarah – conversations very helpful! I hope to be back before too long. Incidentally, went for a short steep walk up Blackingstone Rock – not featured in your walks, I think, but really worth it. Breathtaking in every sense! |

It gave us time away from normal ‘stuff’ – computers and phone, to look back over the last year and try and sort some things out! It was very comfortable and warm, the food provided was lovely, as were the staff we met, just perfect. Thank you all so much for a much needed ‘breather’! It was just what we hoped for. |
| |
| Complete solitude in real comfort – exactly what I needed! |
| |
| The surroundings are so spectacularly beautiful; the lodge itself light, airy, attractive and well-equipped; the care attentive and appropriate and never intrusive; the welcome personal. |
| |
| I found quiet and was undisturbed. The surroundings and grounds were beautiful. My needs were met (including the lovely food) with the minimum of fuss. There was support there if I needed it. The massage was amazing and released my mind and soul as well as my body. I would have found my stay more enjoyable if the mattresses were a bit more comfortable! I ended up sleeping on one duvet and covering with the other to avoid backache. |
| |
| Thanks once again for a wonderful stay and for the unobtrusive but always generous hospitality, which enabled grace to begin its work again. |
| |
| Sheldon is a beautiful place with a real sense of peace. I thought that the lodge was very comfortable and homely – the food supplied was excellent. Above all it was great to be able to relax, enjoy a massage etc. and be left alone without having ‘structured’ days full of dining table conversations about “so how many churches do you have then?”! Thanks! |
| |
| The accommodation is exceptionally good – comfortable, warm, good facilities – bathroom suite and kitchenette, with a beautiful outlook, with private bird viewing thrown in – and clean. We enjoyed our time here – mostly to have rest ourselves and time as a couple and to visit our son at University. We also appreciated the chapels and library and massage and jacuzzi – and the respect of privacy. |
| |
I wasn't quite sure what to expect at Sheldon but its been very good time and space with God to reflect, pray and get a better perspective on things. ... you have encouraged and helped me to take the next steps of my life and ministry with more confidence. |
| |
| Sheldon is truly a place of healing and renewal. The thoughtfulness with regard to every aspect of our stay was quite incredible. We look forward to the possiblity of staying with you again in the future and enjoying the peace, the wonderful surroundings and delicious food. [My wife] joins me in thanking you for all the love, care and kindness shown to us both. |
| |
It’s a welcoming and spiritual space for visitors, with support as needed or simply the gift of time there if not. The Medieval Chapel offers a special and holy space for prayers. The homemade food is varied and sustaining too!
….just the most minor suggestion – while the sign on the Pig Pen door explained how to unlock the door by lifting the handle, it didn’t say how to un lock it (nor what the round knob [?] is for). Just a bit more information helpful. Thanks and Happy and Blessed Christmas. |
| |
- Warm welcome, and generous but understated hospitality.
- Lovely home-made food.
- Lodge beautifully comfortable and warm, even in the depths of winter; also quiet – hardly aware of other guests in close proximity – v. good sound-proofing! No creature
comfort has been forgotten; resident teddies appreciated.
- Wonderfully still spaces for private prayer in the Medieval Chapel and Sanctuary.
- Beautiful local walks without having to take the car.
- Excellent massage to help relax.
- Very much enjoyed the coffee/tea times and the quiet friendliness of the community and volunteers.
……I would have valued a weekly Eucharist at Sheldon, especially mid-week; however, plenty of Eucharistic worship on Sundays in local churches, and I enjoyed discovering these and worshipping with the local communities. I appreciated the posting of Sunday service times/locations, so I could plan where to go in advance. |

Sheldon is a beautiful place and I’m sure I’m not the only person who found the peace a real help. I know that atmosphere is down to you all and your dedication. I have spoken highly of Sheldon to all my friends and am sure myself that I will return. May God continue to bless you all and your work. |
| |
| I came here exhausted carrying heavy burdens and a backlog of work that seemed impossible to penetrate. In two-and-a-half days I have done a huge amount of it and written a difficult letter that has been waiting to be sent for several months. More than that I feel I have been ‘carried’ by the peace of Christ in this place and can once again hear His call. This is so precious. Joining with the Community for prayer was glorious. There was enough in the liturgy that was familiar, to make me feel ‘at home’! – but the moments of silence, which were different to the way we pray at home, were rich with God’s blessing and truth. Thank you for everything. P.S. the Jacuzzi was heavenly! |
| |
| I just wanted to say ‘thank you’ for spending some time with me over the past few days. You may have thought that you didn’t do much – but you have encouraged and helped me to take the next steps of my life and ministry with more confidence. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect at Sheldon - but it’s been very good – time and space with God to reflect, pray and get a better perspective on things. Many thanks. |
| |
| I am immensely grateful to have been able to spend time here at Sheldon during my sabbatical. This has been a precious and blessed sanctuary where I have been able to complete a considerable amount of my writing. I am particularly grateful to have been able to share this week with my youngest son, who has accompanied me. It has given him the opportunity to experience for himself the beauty of this place and the close care we are held in by the community. As ever the food has been delicious and the Lodge warm and comfortable. |
| |
| ... the space, peace and beautiful environment, time to rest, read, pray, reflect, walk (loved the quiet lanes) and just stop for a few days. The very comfortable, well equipped and thoughtfully designed lodge was a great base. I loved the sanctuary – the alcove/coach was a place of rest, relaxation and time with the massage was done with real care and love. The one to one time was really helpful – good to be listened to by someone sensitive to the issues but totally objective. I would have enjoyed some mustard with my food! Thank you for a brilliant time! |
| |
| My stay allowed me a break in restful surroundings in a time of enormous stress, confusion and unrelenting work. The accommodation was exceptionally comfortable – so much more relaxing than other retreat facilities. It was a treat to know of and receive such care. I would have found my stay more enjoyable if it hadn’t rained so much! |
| |
| The accommodation met our needs well (nice not to have to bring washing-up liquid), the views and walks were refreshing; and your hospitality got the balance right for us between being available and leaving us space. |
| |
It gave a break in quality accommodation; helpful as we needed time away from our jobs to think, pray and enjoy each others company; enjoyable as everything was provided, the food and accommodation were excellent, the library and choice of DVDs good and the grounds a welcome break from inner city parish life. I can’t be critical about anything - as usual I would give you 5 stars and a recommendation to Egon Ronay. |
| |
… I appreciated being left alone. I thought the stocked larder was marvellous. The accommodation was all one could wish. I returned feeling physically and spiritually refreshed. I managed to steal a book by accident, which I am enclosing. |
| |
... Plenty of time for relaxation and thought and prayer in pleasant surroundings. Hospitality excellent as before. I always find duvets too warm so it was helpful to have blankets to use instead. Many thanks! |
| |
… Far too late, but we do both want to say how much we enjoyed and deeply valued our week's stay in August. Your welcome, your ethos, your setting and your thoughtfulness did us both a power of good. Looking back, we hardly seemed to cross paths with the community at all; but we weren't being isolationist or shy: we were just glad of the chance of each other's uninterrupted company, in the most therapeutic setting. And we were aware of the strengths and gifts of the place and its people - and benefitted from them more than we might have been able to convey at the time. We booked in the first place knowing your reputation, and the good you had done to friends of ours; and are so glad - and grateful - that we gained so much from our stay. |
| |

We found our stay useful/helpful/enjoyable because we felt surrounded by attentive but unobtrusive care. Everything about Sheldon is lovingly and tastefully designed/ maintained/prepared, with careful and quiet attention to details. Such quality in everything but in no way ostentatious. All so unassuming and discreet. It would have been more enjoyable if there were thicker mattress covers/underblankets so that we couldn’t feel the springs! We were also a little surprised to find no underslip on the pillows which were therefore rather stained and grubby. [webeditor: thanks for flagging this up. The beds and mattresses in this Lodge have been replaced and we’ll keep a closer eye on the pillows.] |

| Thank you so much for having me. I knew I was tired after a very busy spell and a couple of months of ill health, but had no idea how tired till I found myself sleeping virtually round the clock. The space and permission to do this was a blessing |
| |
I was able to relax and ‘do my own thing’ in an atmosphere I can only dewscribe as ‘supportive peace’. I had contact with some members at the community team time to time, which was re-assuring. I could be along without feeling isolated. Just what I needed! The food was great too! And I appreciated the quiet offices and round the old chapel a great place to “be still and know….” Can’t think of anything that would have made it better. Thank you all so much. |

~ the library proved to be inspirational - again! I found a book I'd never seen before and which was just what I needed!
~
the flowers on the table of our Lodge were beautiful.
~ the medieval chapel was so simple and peaceful.
~
we were given space just to be, with no demands made on us. Thank you!
We would have found our stay at Sheldon more useful/helpful/enjoyable if … the only thing we missed was a bath to relax in! (Perhaps we will ask in advance next time!) |
| |
~ You were gently welcoming
~ You have a beautiful place
~ You prepare wonderful food
~ It is so peaceful
~ Everything is so carefully and thoughtfully prepared
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I can't think of anything you could do differently. If you were able to use Ecover cleaning products, recycled bathroom paper, and provide tupperware boxes rather than cling film, that would be great. But I suspect you would have thought about this and there is a reason why not. |
| |
Thanks especially for two weeks of rest and refreshment. The weather was glorious - sun every day- which meant we could also go out exploring - but it also meant we could just be still and enjoy the peace of the garden. We're already missing the lovely view from the upstairs window in the mornings and the evenings ! We both found best ways to be still before the Lord , me in the chapel (cooler than the Sanctuary!) and [my wife]in the garden. It took a few days to slow down and rest - both of us feeling quite weary due to the demands of a complex parish as well as [my wife's] nursing work at the hospital. Unfortunately I had also been quite ill requiring sickness leave for several weeks just before we came, so it was very timely and assisted me in recovering. Many thanks and look forward to our next stay at Sheldon. |
| |
~ I was held by the loving, prayerful support of a community whose concern was my physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
~ I was listened to, believed and gently helped to move forward with issues
~ I was prepared to "rejoin the world" in a way that means I can face its opportunities and challenges with hope and eagerness
~ I was allowed to be unsociable (and made to feel this was quite normal) for as long as I needed this
~ The stocked larder was such a good one. Sheldon doesn't do hungry or boring when it comes to food
~ And the jacuzzi/massage experience was all part of the process.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ...
~ I'd had less far to travel! There is some nice countryside in the north of England... !!!
~ Prior warning had been given of when the library was going to be closed (or was it there and I missed it?). It wasn't much of a problem, but it would have helped.
~ There had been laundry facilities. Again no great problem, but it would have helped.
Sheldon is so much needed. Thank you for being and for all you've given to help me also to be. |
| |
... The accommodation was lovely. and in an ideal location for quality time together. Spectacular surroundings. Everyone we spoke to was very helpful, and supportive. I would definitely consider coming again, and would be happy to advertise it in York Diocese as an alternative to what is available locally. Library facilities, DVDs, light reading, greatly appreciated.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... the only problem was the noise of the fridge motor vibrating through the ceiling about the bed - frequently! |
| |
~ Everything is so beautifully organised
~ It does exactly what it sets out to do
~ A consistent loving service arising from a clear vision
~ Excellent food, excellent accommodation, excellent views, excellent library
~ We enjoyed staying an extra day than we usually do
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... we missed having a copy of the walks in the Linhay folder. This was of minor importance to us, but new folk may not realise how many fabulous walks are in this locality. The unsettled weather resulted in us exploring different things for our afternoon outings. Topsham was worth visiting. |
| |
| ... You have achieved everything that you have set out to do - from my experience over the past few days, thank you, it's a very special place. I arrived at a 'road block' and I'm leaving, knowing what the first few steps on the way ahead are. |
| |
| ... I could do exactly as I wanted - get up when I felt ready etc. I love the easy accessibility of the Sanctuary. Having a view, birds all around me - especially the woodpecker! The quiet; loads of good walking places. |
| |
~ Peace and quiet
~ Clean and spacious Lodge
~ Delicious food
~ Good and discreet organisation
~ Lovely walks
~ You know where you are
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ...
Privacy etc sometimes a bit self-conscious and reminiscent of Communist bloc before the wall came down (!) - in a Christian community. I understand reasons for this, but may be balance needs to be a bit warmer. |

| ... it removed me from a potential dangerous situation. I was nutured and cared for in a very basic way, helping me to restore the balance and rythmn of my life (eating, sleeping, exercise). Allowing me to find and restore my faith, and open my heart again to let God in. I have been allowed time to find myself and put myself back together in order to make important life changing decisions. But, most importantly, I think you may have saved my life. Thank you so much. May God continue to bless the ministry that happens here. |
| |
| ... No where else can we find such blissful silence! No phones and no doorbells, real bliss!! We found all the staff sensitive and very helpful. We will return as soon as we can. |
| |
| ... The peace, quiet and 'space' to be, and to have rest and discover a bit of my 'self' again. Thank you so much! |
| |
... I had the time to let anxieties and fears rise to the surface like air bubbles in water. The care and compassion, the deep peace and joy that seem to be in the very air enabled me to deal with those fears and left me strengthened and renewed for whatever might lie ahead in the weeks to come.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I had had one more full day - 3 nights is absolute minimum, 4 would have been better! |
| |
| ... It provided exactly what we needed - complete peace and quiet, in beautiful surroundings, so that we could re-charge our batteries and take stock. Thank you for your welcome and for the provision of such a comfortable lodge. We really appreciate the unobtrusive prayerful support of the community and the numerous signs of God's presence. Very many thanks again. |
| |
| ... Excellent accommodation with the view from the main window really appreciated. The grounds were also enjoyed and the peaceful atmosphere was very welcome. We returned home feeling refreshed and thankful for Sheldon and its staff. |

... It was a complete break from the pressures of what are effectively two full-time jobs requiring tight time management. So - complete freedom to 'be' for a few days! No schedule, no phones, no emails, no expectations. Instead, time to walk, read, pray, sleep - and in any order! After a couple of days, I was ready to join in the daily rhythm of community worship - and not lead! For me it was a bonus that the place was fairly quiet after Easter, and very peace-full.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I missed table fellowship : conversation at mealtimes would have been enjoyable. |
| |
| ... It was available to us just at the right time, when we needed it and wonderfully met our needs, both expressed and unknown. Everything was so well thought through, accommodation, housekeeping and provisions in the larder, demonstrating an essential understanding, insight and unobtrusive level of care which is on-going. Thank you. |
| |
... The peace, the accommodation (its design and preparation) the food are all expressive of the loving care that is Sheldon and its community. The integrity of the place is demonstrated by the quiet midday prayers being led by she who had shared in cooking the lunch and in giving me a massage!
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... we could have stayed longer and I didn't need to return to the APCM, Holy Week, Easter ...! During an extended time of serious trauma and domestic readjustment, our ten days with you was right space at the right time in a truly holy place. Thank you. |
| |
| ... Many thanks for all you have done to breathe life into a smouldering wick, to give strength to a broken reed. I am particularly grateful to Sarah and Carl for their help, but I am also aware that the healing atmosphere of this place is created by you all under God. From the excellent food, to a shower head at a height suitable for reasonably tall people, it is your attention to detail and your commitment to good quality that shows the depth of your care. |
| |
| ... We are so grateful for being able to spend a few days here at Sheldon and experiencing the refreshment of body, mind and soul our break has provided. A sincere "thank you" to you and the other community members for making this possible. |
| |
~ The beauty of the scenery.
~ The quietness of the setting.
~ The comfortableness of the rooms.
~ The provision of the food.
~ The opportunity to unwind.
~ The sense of the presence of the Lord.
~ The lack of contactability by mobile phone!
~ The space and time given by the residential team.
Can I just say, I thoroughly enjoyed my jacuzzi and body massage - not something I had done before but would highly recommend. Thank you Jan. I do want to ask about "centering" - was this prayer or a spiritual connecting? I wish I had asked more about this as I felt uncomfortable not knowing what was going on at this point. I became aware that Tai Chi music was being played, and felt it was beginning to border on Eastern spirituality and not a massage done by a Christian. But, this was probably because I didn't fully understand what was happening, and perhaps some more explanation would have been helpful. But, I loved it and it was incredibly relaxing. |
| |
~ It has given me a wonderful place in which to rest, de-stress, rejuvenate and pray and have fun.
~ The care has been unobtrusive, discreet, accepting and affirming.
~ There is an ethos of warmth and compassionate kindness around the place and people - even from those who said nothing.
~ It is restful and nurturing to be in a place that is so warm and comfortable and with delicious food I haven't cooked!
~ The time to watch and listen to the birds and soak up the beauty of spring makes it easy to praise God for creation!
~ I have appreciated the clarity of boundaries and detailed care - even in, for example the excellently described walks. Great library and time to read!
~ I felt a bit awkward about the cost of staying here. The people paying for me to be here actually only allow £250 per retreat/per week. However, the issue is more mine/ours than Sheldon's (I think). I wasn't told of 'our' £250 limit until I'd booked Sheldon!! You do say the costs are a guide only. It is good value! |
| |
| ... It gave me time alone from ministry and family life for the first time in 15 years. Nothing to distract to, nothing to juggle, no-one else to feed and look after. Thank you. |
| |
| ... I was given time, space and company as I needed it, without judgment or pressure. I was given a comfortable home for a few days. I was given good food to eat. I was given fresh air and beauty to enjoy and speak to me. I was given time with God in a way I have not had for many a long year. I have found the people here to be trying to follow Christ in a very real way and it shows in all they do - it comes out of the woodwork even. |
| |
| ... The peace of Sheldon and your helpful but gentle running of the place, gave me the space and time to unwind. Thank you! |
| |

| ... the space to be able to rest and think under God ... the ministry of care given for mind, body and soul that is important to receive - and to have space to allow that for oneself. |
| |
... wonderful, quiet relaxing. Holy and restful place. Will come again for longer without doubt. The Sanctuary, garden, walks etc were so lovely and good for restoring the soul. The accommodation was wonderfully comfortable.
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... clearer recycling instructions - got a little confused. Road instructions/map could be a little clearer. |
| |
| ... it gave me everything and more that I expected. Welcome, loving care, just beautiful, quiet and peaceful, space and freedom ... perfect! |
| |
... having stayed before, we knew what a very special place it is. It provides a safe and loving environment where you can fully "retreat" from the pressures of parish life. 'We were able to spend uninterrupted time with God to seek His will for our future ministry and were able to finally make decisions to move forward. It is very difficult to express in words the sense of peace and prayer one feels cocooned in - thank you.
We would have found our stay more useful/enjoyable if ... we didn't have to leave! |
| |
... it was everything you said it was and more! The standard of provision and comfort is very high. The Sanctuary is a wonderfully moving space that spoke to all my senses and enabled me to worship. Thank you all so much.
... Very practical suggestion - would have used less water if a small washing up bowl was provided - quieter too! |
| |
... of the opportunity to be quiet, looked after (no meal planning!) in comfortable - no, more than comfortable surroundings. The view from the windows - the blue tits on the feeders - the robin at the window - the deer in the copse - God in heaven and all ok with the world. I can't think of anywhere better suited for a quiet retreat - it was everything I needed.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I had remembered last year when I promised myself a longer retreat this year. After four days I am just beginning to feel relaxed enough to allow God to really get to work in me, through me and with me. I pray that what has begun in me will, with God's help and grace, continue despite the pressures of parish life. Thanks to all the team for making and keeping this place so special - for your various ministries in God's service. |

| ... my need was for three days of solitude for prayerful reflection and planning. My time in the Linhay provided for this in wonderful surroundings. The accommodation was excellent and the food in the larder was ideal, varied and easy to prepare, even for someone with poor cooking skills. I can highly recommend Sheldon as an ideal retreat with friendly, warm and welcoming service. Thank you. |

~ Good arrangements at Stephen's Lodge
~ Kindness and sensitivity of the community
~ Attractive surroundings
~ Simplicity of the chapel
~ Good massage
~ Our respective sessions with Carl and Sarah
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... we had taken advantage of your home cooking! Thank you very much. It was a very valuable time for us. |
| |
~ Everyone I spoke to was very friendly and helpful
~ The food was enjoyable and the instructions very straightforward
~ The main living space was delightful and very comfortable
~ The whole place was/is very restful and peaceful
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ...
I am a little taller than average (not quite 6 foot) but I did find the bed rather small and even more so the bedding. I stopped the duvet migrating using a blanket, but my personal preference would have been for a larger duvet. |
| |
| ... our accommodation was warm, personal and comfortable. The environment was quiet - just like we hoped ... We'll be back someday |

| ... I found some real peace and quiet in some very comfortable accommodation. Everything was provided that I required. I liked the available DVD/TV - a new addition? |
| |
| ... Space - Time - a well stocked fridge and larder with wholesome food - excellence throughout - surrounding beauty - the quiet - the library - walks. |
| |
… I came to Sheldon full of lots of ‘I shoulds', ‘I musts' ‘I have tos', and not sure whether I wanted to do any of it. I left having had the space to bring ‘the truth of myself before God' and with a determination to allow a little bit more light into all areas of my life. Thank you! |
| |
| … it has been a very blessed time. The ambience has been perfect for creative spiritual writing and although we have hardly spoken I have felt held and encircled by your love and prayers. It has been a joy to be able to eat lovely nutritious meals without having to worry about shopping or preparation – a real luxury and wonderfully helpful. Jan's massage made me feel like a new woman. The lodge has been the perfect space in which to pray, to write, to reflect and to ‘be', and I have found quiet moments in the Sanctuary very powerful. The Lord has met with me and surprised me in many ways. It has been a privilege to witness how your small community cares quietly prayerfully efficiently and unobtrusively for your guests with real respect and love. |
| |
| … it has been the perfect ambience for what I needed – quiet loving space with freedom to ‘be'. I have valued so many things – dining on your wonderful ‘larder stock' meals, the peace and the ‘presence' praying in the sanctuary, the ‘attention' to detail in the environment created here, a sense of being held and encircled by love and prayer, the wonderfully renewing massage, the glorious piece of this place. All in all a real ‘quality space' in which to meet God. Thank you to all. |
| |
… I found the space to relax and unwind, the surroundings were beautiful, the accommodation so comfortable and the staff so caring and supportive. Thank you to Sarah, Hillary and Jan for a lovely few days. |
| |
... Beautiful healing surroundings. All the small things you have done to make this such a healing place (ie. tea tray, cake and flowers on arrival. Teddy bear. Smiling fish on shower curtains, bird feeder on balcony. Good wholesome easy to prepare food. TV. Everything clean, tidy , no expense spared - made me feel special and valued. Guided walk sheets. Portable payphone.
Very professional help given. I was listened to by people who understood and treated me like an adult and trusting that God would be doing the healing. Enjoyed being left alone but knowing support was there if required. It would be so easy to make fragile people feel dependent on this place but you have provided a resting place, a place of refreshment, and new skill for me to take back down into the valley…Thank you. You have helped me to smile again. |
| |
... Sheldon provided much needed comfortable space for reflection … and the opportunity to discern several important stepping stones … I appreciated the caring and unobtrusive hospitality of the community. |
| |
... The Lodge was warm and homely … thoughtful extras rolled in. |

... The relaxed surroundings and gentle care – I wish I had discovered you before burnout. The stay was too short, but I will return. Highly recommend the massage – never had one before. |
| |
… uninterrupted space with everything so thoughtfully and gently provided, a real life-saving time for prayer, reflection, reading, recreation and also physical and mental rest of the best kind. Quite invaluable for me at this particular time. With very many thanks to the unobtrusive providers. |
| |
… warm, cosy space, well equipped, great views, no phone, no callers, time for us. |
| |
… a wonderful time of rest, refreshment, renewal. Thank you for the care and hospitality which is never intrusive. Thank you too for the excellent home made food. I received nourishment for body and spirit! |
| |
… the food was everything we needed, tasty healthy and a treat. The Lodge was spotless. We were really left alone to enjoy peace and quiet. We felt part of the family for those few days because everyone knew who we were. It wasn't the sort of retreat you felt like you couldn't watch TV or do ‘unspiritual' relaxing things if you needed to – it made it a good physical rest.
We would have found our stay at Sheldon more useful/helpful/enjoyable if … the beds were more comfortable – they are getting a bit too soft. |
| |
… unhurried timeout to catch up with oneself to relax and reflect. A very precious time. Straight talking from Carl helped me to focus on my commitment to change, and Sarah's perceptive comments are helping us both to move forward. Thank you for the childminding provision for the joint session which enabled us to concentrate without distraction. |
| |
… of the peaceful, relaxing environment with no demands.
We would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if … room heating could be turned down. Thermostat was well below 20ºC but room thermometer read 25ºC. Sorry to complain about being too warm! |
| |
… everything was clearly marked. Our boundaries were clearly defined. We lacked for nothing because the team at Sheldon had already thought through for us on our behalf before our arrival everything that needed to be thought through. Every demand on our lives was taken from us as soon as we entered through the gate! It was great that mobile phones didn't work in the great majority of the venue's grounds. We loved the views from our homely residence and felt that we were staying right in the midst of nature itself. Having a DVD selection, a beautiful library and several places especially reserved for prayer and reflection make Sheldon the perfect place to kick off your shoes and be recreated.
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if …
… there had been ice in the large Linhay utility freezer, or in our Lodge. We decided to have a gin and tonic and there was no ice!!
… a map and details had been readily available for local mass venues. As Catholics we had to do a bit of researching and running around to find out what was available and when … but this is only a minor point and we are used to doing it anyway. Thank you for everything!! |
| |
… of the opportunity to just ‘be' unpressured with no calls on own time. Bless you for your gracious hospitality, for the quiet and unobtrusive acts of care and love, for the provision of meals, the fluffy towels and flowers – the warmth and comfort. May God continue to minister to you as you provide for others. Everything was just right for us – I can think of nothing I would add. |
| |
… the Lodge was very comfortable. I really appreciated the proximity of the Sanctuary to the Lodge and I was able to make use of it at anytime without inconvenience. I liked sitting in the garden and reading a book and, of course, the fantastic views of the surroundings from the garden. |
| |
… thank you once more for providing the usual splendid place of rest and refreshment. We were able to unwind and relax and renew and refresh. Even the building works going on didn't interfere! Jan's massages were just what we needed. |

… we were pressure–free, including having to make polite conversation, small talk and saying who we were etc. That was a real boon. We enjoyed being together away from everyone and everything in warm, clean hospitable surroundings with beautiful views. Thank you to everyone in the community who made it all possible. |

| ... It provided a peaceful place for convalescence in a safe environment. The facilities are excellent and the provisions were most welcome. For someone with limited mobility the supply of books, DVDs, games and puzzles was a bonus, and the areas set out for quiet reflection were lovely. |
| |
... Plenty of time and space to reflect and pray. Excellent food and accommodation. Lovely walks in the area and attractive grounds… Accomplished all I came here to do, resourced and ready to re-enter fray! |
| |
... Beautifully equipped accommodation, lovely views and walks, calm atmosphere and stillness along with the gentle discrete attendance of the community members. It was good to have the DVDs, videos and library available to us and the good stock of basics (eg. tea, cooking oil etc) in the Lodge. The little touches like the houseplants, candles and flowers on the table made Clare's Lodge feel homely and welcoming. All-in-all a delightful and much needed break. Very many thanks.
We would have found our stay at Sheldon more enjoyable if … an open air heated swimming pool for a cooling swim on return from hot summer days out would put the cherry on the cake! |

| ... Absolutely great. A real blessing! |
| |
... It was good to be in a place where I was neither judged nor cosseted. I felt my autonomy returning. I was able to “waste” time simply being, and completing only domestic tasks in the Lodge. The birds on the feeder made me laugh! The library books provided hours of reassurance and challenge … The silence and the beauty of the place embraced me. Thanks too to Jan for the massage and to the person who settled me into the jacuzzi. Great kindness and sensitivity from everyone, including ground staff.
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... it hadn't rained so much – hardly your department! |
| |
| ... I appreciated my stay a good deal. Thank you for arranging things for me and to Hillary and the ladies in Reception for their welcome … Finally, the grub! The celery and apricot, and parsnip and apple soups were scrummy. |
| |
| ... I needed space and time out after a very busy year with many critical and wonderful life events. I have been able to just “be” and process and pray through and for all those in my family, my friends and work situations. The Jacuzzi was great fun and I really found Jan's massage amazingly relaxing and enjoyable. Thank you for enabling me to begin to recharge my much depleted batteries. |
| |
... Everything was perfect with the opportunity to be as quiet as I wanted to be, which was very . The accommodation was superb – everything I needed and more – you seem to pre-empt every need. The view was unsurpassable. |
| |
| ... Great accommodation, far beyond my expectations. The culinary delights of Martha's kitchen. Undemanding loving acceptance and unintrusive hospitality. … Rolling hills, spreading oaks, sheep, rabbits, deer, birds at the feeder, scent of lavender and rose and honeysuckle … so many special places to sit and be still, from the cushioned alcove in the sanctuary to the wooden swing bench in Dingly Dell. Books and films galore in the library. Space to be still, to be me, to be real, and to know that God is God. … I'll be back. Some tissues in the Lodge and the Sanctuary might be useful. |

| |
| ... Thank you all for a wonderful peaceful stay. I am rested and refreshed. |
| |
... It was so comfortable and undemanding. Wonderful countryside to walk in, upmarket accommodation and every detail taken care of. I haven't slept so well for years. Great collection of books both old and new. Can recommend to anyone wanting to be in silence for a few days. I would have found my stay at Sheldon more enjoyable if (tongue in cheek!) there'd been a step in the library to access top row of books! |
| |
… peaceful surroundings, space to relax, unwind and listen to God. Thank you for providing this oasis! |
| |
| ... the tranquillity and beauty of the setting, the standard of accommodation and catering and the freedom to do as I wished and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. |
| |
| … you made available to me just what I need: peace, comfort, privacy and space. Many thanks. |
| |
... the peace and beauty enabled us to 'be'. Stephen's Lodge is comfortable, simple, uncluttered and ideal as a place to withdraw. The food was delicious, the Lodge beautifully clean. The gardens and views exquisite.
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... we had a top sheet on the bed. We found the room quite hot and didn't always need a quilt - however it was chilly without anything! |

| ... I was in need of a break and you kindly found space for me at short notice. It was the perfect place with the quiet, peaceful surroundings, and all I need to be comfortable in the Lodge. Thank you so much! I wish I could have stayed longer! |
| |
| ... Linhay provides beautiful accommodation with wonderful views and great countryside as a setting for quality time apart. The larder stock provisions are generous and delicious - but not necessarily good for the figure! A massage is a great bonus as you unwind. |
| |
... It was so peaceful, safe, unintrusive, but supportive, welcoming, accepting and completely unpressured. Everything had been so carefully thought through and communicated perfectly in the welcome pack/folder in the Lodge. Don't take the teddy away! A wonderful touch! The Sanctuary and private Linhay gardens were just what I needed to be free to be me. The jacuzzi/spa pool was an added bonus - lovely! The grounds are not only beautiful and very carefully mapped out, but tangibly peaceful, and restorative. Normally, whenever I have been away on my own, or been out walking on my own, I have felt a slight awkwardness - rather conspicuous and self-conscious. Never once, did I feel that at Sheldon. That is worth its weight in gold!! Sheldon is a very special place, an absolute treasure for clergy and top of my list of resources! Thank you.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I'd booked in for longer!! (My fault, not yours!) |
| |
... We found it the perfect place to rest and relax. The community were on hand if we needed them. The Lodge was exactly what we needed - well equipped, clean and comfortable. The surrounding area was perfect for walks and short drives, which meant we could relax or take exercise as and when we felt like it. The peace of the centre really helped us to think and focus on our situation and future. We came away feeling relaxed and at peace though reluctant to leave.
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ...
the upstairs floor of the Lodge was extremely noisy and we found it impossible for one to be upstairs and the other remain asleep downstairs. |

~ Great accommodation
~ Good food
~ Sanctuary was wonderful
~ Silence
~ Scenery
~ DVD library!
~ God was there.
Thank you. |

I have valued greatly :
~ the excellent accommodation in the Linhay
~ the delicious home-prepared food
~ the opportunity for quality 1:1 time
~ the beauty and peace of the two chapels and the 'Shepherd's Sanctuary'
~ the walks in the wonderful countryside all around
~ the communities vision of unconditional hospitality, linked with its respect for the "personal space" of each guest.
Thank you and bless you all! |

| ... My first visit left me hugely impressed! Thank you for providing Christ-like TLC without intrusion. I am mindful that you're providing a desperately needed resource for many and salute your own sacrificial commitment to this end. Clare's Lodge - very comfortable, and all requirements met graciously and again without intrusion. Bless you all - you'll be richly rewarded in Heaven! Bird feeder, Teddy, Snoopy along with ducks in the bath - lovely little additions by which to re-claim one's child's heart! |
| |
| ... Everything was provided to enable my quiet time to be a real benefit and a joy. The staff were available if needed, helpful when asked, but otherwise unobtrusive. Thank you! |
| |
| ... The peace and tranquility is refreshing which is enhanced by the hospitality and welcome from theo community. That comes through in the close attention to detail in every aspect of our stay. Being able to participate in the morning and evening worship is particularly special. Thanks to you all. |
| |
| |
| ... It was just what we needed after a lengthy period of illness. We were able to explore and enjoy the local area, and the Lodge with the stocked larder gave us a very relaxing base. Being supported by the community prayerfully in the background and being able to use the grounds and chapel/sanctuary made for a very special week indeed. Thank you - and our prayers for your life and ministry. |
| |
| ... It is so peaceful, the surroundings are beautiful, the Lodges are well equipped, very comfortable and with so much thought for the 'extras' - lovely pictures, TV, DVD, radio, CD. I felt really pampered. After daily life of having to be responsive to many people, it was such bliss to be allowed to be quiet and solitary! |
| |
... We had some lovely weather in a remote rural location such as we would never normally be able to experience as neither of us drive. We had some very pleasant walks and appreciated being able to use the (usually!) quiet spaces around the site for some much needed prayer and reading.
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... while we greatly appreciated all the thought and hard work behind the scenes enabling everything to run smoothly, and we came quite happy to be left on our own, we ended up being a little surprised not to have felt a bit more warmth from the community. But then to be fair, had we been less independent and come more overtly looking for it, no doubt it would have been there for us! The price of the food and accommodation was probably very reasonable given the quality of what is provided, but nevertheless it did work out a little expensive for us compared with other holidays. |
| |
| ... It was peaceful, restful - we felt protected and secure. Sarah - it was like being wrapped in a warm blanket! Not unobtrusive, but you felt the support was there if needed. Our 2:2 was helpful because it helped us to clarify our present situation and decisions for the future. The Lodges provide everything you need, and very comfortable. Prepared meals excellent. Also a great environment - a lovely place to wander and walk. It is what I describe as a clean and transparent place - where God is in an obvious way, a 'kingdom place'. Thanks for our week. |
| |
... Sheldon gives the opportunity to relax totally and enjoy the peace, the beauty with God's presence all around.
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... we were able to come more often! |
| |
... Once again, it was wonderful just to have the space to be quiet, to think and pray - and to be left alone to do it! Thank you for all your careful provision and kindness. The massage at the start helped me to relax and put aside the stress - and I appreciated the chance to chat with Carl. May God bless all that you do!
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... people were asked not to use the payphone in the boiler room underneath the Sanctuary (disturbs those at prayer!) - but to take it back to their rooms. |
| |

... I have always been a fan - but you are now raised to mythic status! Staying at Sheldon was hugely helpful - why? Because you let me float in and out, come and go, be myself and so forth. And yet, I knew you cared, I knew you prayed, I knew I would have my weekly 'check-up'. I felt safe at Sheldon - and I know I went back feeling a whole 'step' better. I can't begin to say how grateful I am.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I think the only thing that would be helpful to a slightly "long-term" resident, would have been broadband internet access in the lodges. [Webeditor - investigating - watch this space]. There were things necessary to living which nowadays are so much done 'online' that that would have been good. And I can't believe that someone wouldn't pay you good money to site a mobile phone mast somewhere on your land? But the lodge itself was a wonderful, cosy, comfortable haven. |
| |
[written 1 year after 5 week visit] Thank you so much for all you gave me while I was with you – most of all for space, and a beautiful place to stabilise. Thank you too for managing me with a light touch as it were – I always looked forward to seeing you each week. When I came I was conscious that I looked out of the window at that amazing view and it all looked grey. Two days before I left I noticed that the colour was coming back. I think the time away helped me come to some very difficult conclusions, and the year after that was horribly difficult and stormy. But I think (hope) that I have weathered the worst – though I would not have chosen to do it if I could have seen another way through.
I am feeling very much better mentally now, and am on no medication, and enjoy each day as it comes. There is a lot that is uncertain, and I am having to rebuild from the ground up, but I feel positive and hopeful about the future.
Thank you to you and to Sheldon for all you gave me. |
| |
... After the tour of the complex, I was able to explore the site on my own. The walks are very good around the site and the village. The location in the valley is wonderful and so peaceful. I enjoyed the few days that I was able to spend at Sheldon.
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... you could have stopped the rain on the Sunday! |
| |
... I arrived following a journey through sleepy tiredness, worry, storms of pelting rain and sleet - but a journey to a place where my journey is a normal one, where I enter into the prayerful informed validity of seeking refreshment - indeed "laying aside burdens borne for self (harder to acknowledge) and others" -
Coming here is an expression of vulnerability. I cannot stand the thought of the vultures before I left croaking with delight at the sight of my weakness and expressed need (though perhaps there is something quite trendy about checking in at the clinic) - their prayer for me, or their good wishes seeming to be an expression of their power over me. But, I guess, this is becoming vulnerable and learning to own it and take it will bring life. I have found everything about the place so helpful and restoring - for me it was probably a preventative visit - I could see I was getting into a bad place, running on empty. The Linhay accommodation is just amazing; it is the sense of being understood and being normal that is so welcome. My first massage ever was great and the jacuzzi; bypassing my brain filters and just giving me a primary experience of pleasure and re-creation. As I re-read bits of "Affirmation and Accountability" I just find myself thinking 'yes, it's all such good sense' and so important. But, we, clergy and churches, go on colluding with destructive patterns. |
| |
... I can't speak highly enough of the care I received from you all. It was so unobtrusive, yet I knew it was there. My one to one time will be most valuable (thank you Sarah) and congratulations to the cook!! I think I've put on pounds! The bread pudding was especially "yum-yum".
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I think I mentioned to Sarah that maybe a kind notice in utility room by the phone, reminding people that the Sanctuary or "quiet" space is right above them. |

| ... I was closer to collapse than I liked to think and this has been an invaluable breather. Coming from a slightly similar community, I'm full of admiration for the haven you offer here and the quality of care which it embodies. Every blessing. |
| |
| ...Once again, a wonderful and refreshing stay. Everything you do, you do with excellence - but also with kindness and gentleness. It is very much appreciated. Thank you. |
| |
... I was able to care for myself - cooking etc from my larder ... I used the summerhouse again which is always a good place to be - sheltered from the wind - but looking at such a wonderful view. The peace and quiet of the site and help on hand if required. Thanks for all your love and care.
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... I had been able to have my bath tub ... especially good for a soak after a walk ... which I enjoy. I did miss not being able to see the view from my patio windows and also the bird feeder. But the recliner chairs were great! So all in all I really enjoyed my time once again and hope to see you all next year. I've recommended several folk - so hope they enjoy their stay as much as I always do! God bless. |
| |
| ... it's a perfect spot with brilliant people - once again your attention to detail has been superb - the correct balance of warm hospitality and accessibility with personal space. The jacuzzi and massage with Jan were completely relaxing and wonderful. Delicious food, so easy to prepare, the very comfy lodges and the magnificent views have made for a reflective and restoring break. Thank you! P.S. watching 3 deer in the Sheldon Copse was brilliant! P.P.S. it has been good to catch up on many of the films I've missed, great range of DVDs. |

Larder stocked thoughtfully - great not to have to think about going shopping/menu planning. 'Sanctuary' a good place to leave things behind - at the cross. Peaceful, healing space. Ideal when you just want "to be". Thank you. |

... The accommodation was very comfortable. It was very peaceful and good to know that I would not be disturbed during my stay. The little touches such as flowers in a vase and milk in the fridge were much appreciated.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if .. Nothing really. Only a blocked shower drain that meant the water did not drain away when showering. I reported this on departure, because I did not want to be disturbed during my stay. Otherwise, everything else was lovely! |

| ... We were made to feel very welcome, and special. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet, and the way privacy was respected. The food provided was just right! We used the centre as a base to explore the locality and spend quality time together. Not always easy in the parish situation. Thanks. |
| |
| ... It gave me a break away from home and church, first time in 15 months. The food was excellent. The peace and quiet just what I wanted. Having the bar open just half an hour made one drink too quickly. Half an hour after meal would have helped. The staff and community have helped provide excellent service. Thanks for everything.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... in Mary's Lodge a coat hanger for a dressing gown. |
| |
| ... Thank you all so much for a wonderful stay. Although I didn't meet everyone who works at Sheldon, thank you to all of you who make it what it is - a haven of peace. I left without having a chance to say 'goodbye' to some of you, so I just wanted to be sure that you all knew how much I appreciate all you do to provide a place where one can truly relax and recreate. Many blessings... |
| |
| ... We were privileged to spend a weekend with you in one of the Linhay Lodges. It was a very special time for us, giving space for reflection, rest, prayer, lovely walks and time for each other. We enjoyed and appreciated our time with you and hope that sometime in the future, it may be possible to 'withdraw' to the peace of Sheldon again. Our thanks for your care for us and so many kindnesses. Good bless and best wishes. |
| |
.We just wanted to thank you for all the care you have shown us over the last few days (and also when we came in February). Every detail of our stay here has been supported and thought of, and we feel much better for our time here. Thank you for everything you have done, in all your various ministries. It has been a true sanctuary. We go home rested and with food for thought and peace of mind. |
| |
. Thank you so much for a wonderful week of rest and peace. We were especially blessed to find all our favourite foods so lovingly remembered and provided - you are truly amazing! |
| |
. For the beauty of this place, the sense of being surrounded by prayer, the generous gracious hospitality, the space to find God and one another I thank and praise the Lord. It has been so good to be here and I say a sincere 'thank you' to you all. |
|
. Its been a most relaxing, restorative time out of a very busy life. I haven't been very well and it was just what was needed. Your hospitality is very gracious and non-intrusive but very thoughtful and we know where you are if we need you. It really has been a deeply restorative and peaceful time. I also love the silence in your prayer times. |
| |
. I wanted to say thank you very much for providing again the exact conditions I need to gather myself and return to the world a calmer and more reasonable person - easier to live with! Sheldon worked its magic once again and I shall certainly hope to come for a refill in May. |

. it gave me the time and the quietness I needed to reflect on my own ministry in the parish and Deanery. Over several days issues became clear, questions sharper and tentative solutions began to form. I enjoyed the food and the freedom to eat when it suited me; so much time is spent fitted around the schedule of others that it is incredibly refreshing to be able to please myself. Above all though is the quiet, vibrant peace of this little community who gently and unobtrusively surrounded me with their healing and their care. I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if. I came more often and stayed longer. Alas! |

... We write to thank you for looking after us so well last week. We both found the time very refreshing, and it was a real blessing just to be able to come and to "be" after an extremely busy period.
It was wonderful to find David's Lodge such a home from home, so easy to settle in quickly and make four days feel like many more. Being able to listen to the Fab Beatles as we watched the sun set from our beautiful window was a splendid bonus.
During the time with you, I found that I was able to reflect upon my new phase of ministry, to listen to God and to begin to gain an idea of priorities and structure for the future. |

| ... Please convey my thanks to everyone in the community for being so welcoming, and for providing a wonderful place in which I could make retreat last week. Thomas's Lodge felt like coming home; I found the sanctuary chapel to be, well, a real sanctuary; and the walks in and around the grounds were delightful and a rich source of inspiration and restoration ... Thank you! |
| |

The gentle, strong presence of God, which seemed to permeate Sheldon, restored my soul and brought forth in me renewed prayer and thanksgiving. Very many thanks. |

... All 'requirements' had been thought of and provided. It was so peaceful and no-one intruded into that peace. We know we were held in prayer. Such a beautiful place.
We would have found our stay more enjoyable etc if ... it had been longer! |
| |
| ... You seem to have thought of everything we needed to make our visit perfect: wonderful, relaxing accommodation; space in the garden and grounds; peace and freedom to do what we wanted. We loved the library - great selection of books. Thank you for the use of DVDs, games and videos! |
| |
| ... I was given space to be alone but, as always, with a sense of being 'held' by the community. I was able to join the community in prayer. Thank you so much for your generosity and your welcome. I feel incredibly safe here and yet enabled for the journey on. What a precious gift you give. Thank you. |

(Oh - tiny thought ... might be useful to have a current lectionary in the library, if not in the chapels ... Having had lie-ins, long walks, good food and quality time with God, we feel ready to face the hard work of ministry once again. Thank you to all of you here at Sheldon for all you have done for us and for your loving care of all who come here. |

I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if....
Small things - that won't stop me coming back! Linhay sofas could do with bigger loose cushions - the seats are quite wide and something at the back would have been useful. The bed was a little hard. |

I would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... It will be even better when the workmen [on the Pig Pens] have finished!! | ... I was left in peace. I didn't feel obliged to be sociable if I didn't want to. The one-to-one sessions were helpful because I set the agenda and was accompanied on a journey to rediscover the resources and tools I already possessed. I loved the wide spaces to walk in and the animals. The accommodation was comfortable and very well appointed. |

| |
| ... We both thank you all very much for the peaceful few days we spent with you last week. We hope the work on the Pig Pens will go smoothly and look forward to seeing them completed when we come again, which we hope to do one day. |

We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if
... we had more possibilities of access to the library - but we are not complaining!
Thank you for everything! |
| |
... It was quiet and peaceful. No demands were made upon me and I slept well. There was opportunity to think and pray without distraction. Carl was helpful and the chapel and prayer room were ideal.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if
... it had not rained so much! (I shall return in the summer.) Only a small point, the instructions re waste disposal could be clearer, but maybe I am "thick". Where are the re-usable meal cartons meant to go? Sorry if this seems like"nit picking". Sheldon is excellent. |
| |
... Everything to aid my comfort and stay had been anticipated even before I had thought about it myself. I spent all of my time on my own (my own choice) but knew there were people around me who cared and were concerned for my welfare. I cannot think of a more perfect retreat than these past few days. I was concerned about intrusion with regards space and noise, especially since I was aware other guests/programmes were going on in the main buildings - I needn't have been, space and quiet seems to be individually tailored as well! Thank you to you all.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if
... As I mentioned when I first arrived, I often find beds are not very comfortable - alas although adequate, this could have been better! There must be a means of a firm bed but where the interface between body and bed could be softer - maybe a mattress topper or something? |

b) unobtrusive yet caring presence of the community
c) beautiful surroundings and so quiet
d) delicious home-cooked food
e) comfortable (and warm) accommodation
f) the massage (J)
g) the opportunity to pray by myself or to join the community prayers
I would have my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if
... there had been better lighting to read by in the living room. |

... the lodge (Thomas') was wonderful - very homely - the chair and sofa were something else - I felt immediately enveloped in ... God's love? Your love? .... Whatever, it felt very special. Your low-key approach has also been very helpful. (No prayer ministry - YES! - sorry, I've come from a place surrounded by prayer ministry and I've found it very uncomfortable).

... of the way in which so much trouble and care had been taken to make the surroundings comfortable - both spiritually and physically. The numerous places to sit and 'be' hidden away. The lovely Linhay gardens - such a visible sign of being cared for. The seat in The Sanctuary almost inviting you to go to sleep. The way in which all physical needs have been anticipated and met. The sessions were immensely helpful too - what started in them has gone on growing in me since; I gained more than I had realised at the time?
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if...
I had not felt so exposed in the lodge - because the land rises behind them, and the window at the front is so big. There are few spots in them where you know someone passing and looking in could not see you? I know most people don't look up but they could do. And with rooms in the barn opposite facing into the lodges - I found that hard. I changed the furniture round and partly drew the curtains to produce a smaller "window".
|

... of the atmosphere of calm and order here. I appreciated the generous provision of space warmth and food which helped me to rest. I loved the spa, massage and the poetry at evening prayer. I enjoyed the detailed walk instructions and the little meditation walk book. Although a private retreat, I did know I could ask for help if I needed it.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if

... I needed space - and I had it - silence, and I was left in peace, an opportunity to lay down burdens which I did. I was able to read, think, rest, relax and pray. I could do this because I was so well looked after. Everything for my well being and comfort was in the Linhay Lodge. Altho' I could have bought/brought my own food it was nice to have someone else's cooking (very good it was too) and to have more than I could possibly need provided for me. It made me feel treasured. So thank you for six wonderful days.
... The only very slight quibble I had was the duvet kept slipping off - it was too warm to anchor it with a blanket. Perhaps a light bedspread which hung over the duvet might help. Maybe others are not as restless as I am! |

It has been a hugely helpful time, both in terms of giving me some space, but also in the advice you have given me, which I really feel will be of practical help in the coming years, and I will take a lot away with me. Thank you to you, and to all who have looked after me so well during my stay. |
| |
... It was generally quiet and peaceful - with plenty of time for reflection, real prayer and thanksgiving for both the good things of life and for the not so good things. The 'one-to-one' session taught me a number of things : not to try to do things in my ministry that are beyond my reach. My reading including gaining some insight into when things appear to go wrong with friends.
I can't fault the kindliness and thoughtfulness of everyone. The 'lodge' was truly a 'bolt-hole' where I could organize myself as I wished. A very big thank you! |
| |
~ it gave me 'space' to think and pray some important

| ... My wife and I would like to thank you and all your community of Mary and Martha for our wonderful stay with you last week. We realise the quietness and the gentle peacefulness, in which we rested, and through which we were calmed and refreshed, came to us as a result of the sacrifices which the members of the Society make through their response, and obedience, to the Call of God. A wonderful atmosphere; holy, yes; but with loads of common sense!! Thank you very much from both of us |

... I came as part of my sabbatical to retreat from travel/people/the "need to engage" with others, and to have the time to read some theology which I never seem to have time for. The quietness and sanctuary sustained a prayer life of deeper meaning. The Linhay garden a constant source of joy. Was ready to return to my "real" world after the two weeks, feeling calmer, refreshed and more focused.
My stay might have been more helpful/enjoyable/productive if
... I looked for a dictionary in the library. Did I miss it? If not, a Concise Oxford, or similar would be an asset. Did you know that "margarine" is spelt incorrectly on your "Larder rules" in the Linhay!!! |

| |
| ... it suits me down to the ground to be given all I need to run my own retreat, just to be left to my own devices. The accommodation is excellent, the surroundings are wonderfully peaceful and stimulating at the same time, the food is excellent. |
| |
~ an ideal setting
~ excellent facilities
~ opportunity away from demands
~ anonymity with other guests appreciated!
~ larder facility enabling my own catering was good
~ very many thanks for accommodating me at such short notice
~ spiritually very uplifting - chapels, quiet space, garden, walks, library
~ a good place to be depressed in!
~ staff very helpful but not intrusive |
| |
| ... It gave me the space, freedom and peace to reflect in a gently guided way (by Carl). Not having to interact with other guests (which at first felt strange, even anti-social) was in fact a real bonus and removed the intrusion of falling into 'clergy speak' with others. The lodges are fantastic. |
| |
... The one to one sessions were so skilled and insightful. I valued someone taking my body so seriously, and cannot think of anywhere I could have gone and received that sort of help combined with the spiritual. The offices of prayer were just sufficiently holding without setting another busy agenda. Beautiful setting, house and walks in the grounds. The sitting room in my lodge with its wide opening window was just a joy, and the resources of the utility room were simply fantastic. No fuss about practical things - great.
My stay might have been more helpful/enjoyable/productive if
a) I had been introduced to/shown around the rest of the site, even if on the understanding some of it was unavailable this particular week. The dividing line of the road felt rather odd. A quiet bit and a noisy bit are sensible and necessary, but there is a slight risk the "Linhay lot" end up feeling they don't belong.
b) Similarly, I felt a bit shocked we never worshipped all together as one community on the site, even if only once a week. I would have preferred a visible sign of all being one, even if some were quiet, some noisy etc the rest of the time.
c) I would prefer it if there were some Sunday worship, even early am or late pm.
But that's just me, and I survived and thrived! |
| |
... My time alone enabled me to face some very difficult issues without any distractions. In a way I would have liked distractions because what I had to face was so very painful. The beauty and peace of Sheldon helped me to clarify my thoughts and gave me the courage to put into action life changes that will require much work in the future. I am so very grateful for the opportunity to be alone with myself and for the lovely lodge and food.
... I don't think anything could have been better, I hope you have your water fixed now! |
| |
| ... We enjoyed and appreciated the time out enormously. We were ready for it and Sheldon did the trick again. We love the way in which you all work... everything carefully thought through, with great attention to detail... all the arrangements well prepared, and yet we never see anyone working! That's a real art and testimony to great forethought and hard work behind the scenes. Thank you to all the staff. |
| |
... It was lovely just to enjoy the peace and quiet and come and go as we pleased. Mostly it is only possible to go to B&B for a short break, so it is really valuable to be able to come here and enjoy the freedom of self-catering when it's not possible to take a whole week off. Thank you!
A very small suggestion: one night, the only two things worth watching on TV were at the same time. I looked in the library to see if there were any blank video tapes - the TV is 2 tuner, so with a tape we could have recorded one then watched it afterwards. |
| |
| ...Dear Sheldon, once again we have come feeling exhausted and have been able to 'recharge' our spiritual and physical batteries ready to engage in inner city ministry. |
| |
~ extremely comfortable accommodation
~ great food and stock cupboard
~ useful local walks
~ fantastic massages
~ really helpful one to one session
~ 3 chapels to choose from!
~ able to be alone, but know I wouldn't be lonely
~ being able to feed the hens and ducks and the bird feeder
~ jigsaws, videos in library "give permission" to enjoy yourself!
My stay might have been more enjoyable/helpful etc if .....there were some basic herbs and spices in the store cupboard to pep up the "homemade"meals I did [Webeditor: thanks for the suggestion - now provided on a trial basis]. Clocks that don't tick!
Thank you for a wonderful stay! |
| |
~ I was given the space I needed and yet I still felt very cared for.
~ I had a massage for the first time and it was wonderful - it calmed my mind as well as relaxing my body and I felt cherished!
~ The lodge as always was wonderful. Very well equipped and wonderfully quiet!
~ The grounds and being able to wonder in them soothed my soul.
My stay might have been more enjoyable etc if .... the path/field behind the Linhay was very overgrown so I had soggy trousers by the time I reached Dingly Dell! However, this is a very minor thing compared with all the good things and walking in the 'wild' had it's own benefits. Thank you very much for a rejuvenating stay! |

| ... Just a quick note to say a huge thank you for all the care that the team provided for our stay there. We came for stillness and found a lot of fun and in that fun, God was !!! We would love to return even if it was to work for a week or so. |
| |
~ Of the setting of Sheldon, the comfort, luxury of the lodge. The wonderful attention to detail. You have thought of everything.
~ It was like being astounded at finding something new, exciting or challenging at every turn. Just like life with God really.
~ We loved the walks; joining you for services and finding the wind chime on the last day.
~ The animals, especially the ram somehow gave us strength.
~ Down the hill we found Colin and his 'dream' of a railway. Like kids we even had a ride on "Jenny Wren".
~ The food was wonderful - Thank you for the treats!
Our stay might have been more enjoyable if ... we had had longer here! Had the jacuzzi been working!! |
| |
| ... All thoughtfully provided - good welcome and atmosphere - most relaxing and enjoyable stay. Thank you. |
| |
| ... I come to Sheldon each year because I get desperate just to have time to myself; to be able to go at my own pace; to spend time doing things - mostly reading and walking - that I feel a bit guilty about if I do too much of it at home. Your community allows me to do just that, gives me my own space, in such beautiful and comfortable surroundings without making me feel an unsociable freak! Again, after my 6th visit - thank you very much. My stay was brilliant - just what I needed, but because I expect you also like 'helpful' feedback - I couldn't work the shower in David's Lodge [Webeditor: checked and adjusted] . It might have been me being thick, and if it had mattered much I would have come and told you, but in case anyone else has the same difficulty .... |
| |
| ... The space, the silence, the total lack of pressure, enabled me to relax totally, and allow God I guess, in the green landscape, the trees and sky, birds and woods and the amazing wild flowers to do their work unhindered. The comfort and thought behind the lodge and all the amenities here, really couldn't be improved as far as I can see. I am truly most grateful ..... more than I can say! |
| |

| |
| ... It was so peaceful and relaxing and gave me permission to do whatever I wanted. No phone was bliss indeed. The cupboard/fridge was so well stocked - I had everything I needed. Thank you. |
| |
| ... of the comfort of the lodge. To chill out on the recliner and not feel guilty about watching snooker on daytime TV! It was lovely to have the larder filled and the only decision being to choose what to heat up. I appreciated being left alone. Despite the mixed weather, I was able to walk the various site routes, being rewarded early evening in Yonder Wood by the sight of three fox cubs exploring their environment. On the return I saw the vixen off on her search of food. The birds and wild flowers - a sheer joy! A beautiful place. |
| |
... I quote from "Being a Priest Today"- "I found myself again as a human being, a participant in God's marvellous creation".
Space, time, stillness, normality, bad movies, good snooker, sanctuary, fox cubs .... I look forward to next time. A wonderful place - the only addition I would like would be some basic herbs, spices and garlic in the cupboards.
Many thanks indeed. |
| |
... The one-to-one process was good - not patronising, reflective, and focused on my needs. I was surprised that my thinking moved forward substantially in quite a short time. The facilities in the Linhay were superb.
It would have been good to have my bins emptied once or twice - or to have the process of how and where to do this explained [webeditor - in the book!]. The two bins in the kitchen kept falling apart. |
| |
... We enjoy coming back to such a familiar place. We benefit from the peace and feeling of care that we enjoy while with you. The accommodation is well thought out, especially the spectacular views from the sitting area. We enjoy just looking out of the window, watching the birds, the clouds and the beautiful countryside. We appreciate the care that has gone into your Linhay Lodges. Thank you for a wonderful rest. There is really nowhere else that we would rather be in April. Sheldon gives us what we need. |
| |
| ... |
~ I was welcomed warmly in spite of being late.
~ The Linhay Lodge was so thoughtfully provided with the practical support items I needed, and looked so colourful/tasteful without detracting from the beautiful views back and front.
~ On the only fine day of three, I was able to walk in the woods, admire the wild orchids and then sit in the Linhay garden to read; all in the Sheldon grounds, so continuing in the zone of protection.
~ I had a valuable hour with Sarah, being able to share some current issues and work on her advice/reflections for more effective time and energy management.
~ I found the library book she recommended most helpful afterwards.
~ I very much enjoyed my larder stock meals.
I was particularly grateful to the two cleaning ladies who offered to take my bags to the car on leaving, and to Tracy in the office who 'phoned me about a drawer full of my belongings carelessly overlooked, and packed them up so well.... I suppose I might have left my clothes because I myself didn't really want to depart!
Perhaps a little supply of cling film [webeditor - in the drawer!] would have been useful for the microwave, but I heated most things up in saucepans. |
| |
.. The place seems imbued with tranquility that enfolds you as soon as you step out of the car. The larder is stocked over generously! Abundance of good things. And what a treat to watch a video at one sitting without any guilt feelings! The jacuzzi and the massage completed for me a wonderful, restorative 4 night stay. Thank you.
My stay might have been even more enjoyable/productive if...... it had been longer!! I really recommend the drive to the reservoirs - what a beautiful place - also the drive to Chudleigh has some stunning views that just open your mind and heart to the glories God has given us. |
| |
... I really needed help in sorting out what was happening to me and you provided it. Thanks...... As it is I feel as if you've helped me to a new understanding and given me tools to enable me to go on working towards better health and to continue adjusting to retirement. It was good to be a part of Sheldon again. I am particularly glad I listened to you and returned for the second week. Having spoken to some of my family on the 'phone since I got back, the general comment is that I sound brighter and more cheerful. Take a bow! |
| |
| ... As usual had a delightful stay and only wish it were longer. I wonder could the small saucepan in Thomas Lodge be replaced. The non-stick surface is disintegrating and I am concerned about the coating getting into the food. [Webeditor: done!] |
| |
| ... It is a place of peace, of prayer, of unobtrusive hospitality. It's wonderful to find a place where nobody breaks into one's silent walk with God and there is such a "holy" respect for each person. On top of all that, what a beautiful place - God's creation really shouts "Glory" - and the food was fantastic. Thank you team. My stay at Sheldon was PERFECT! |
| |

| |
| ... Your very existence continues to be a source of great encouragement 't'd lasses and lads up north'. |
| |
| ... There was space to pray, read, think and wait on God. The surroundings and accommodation all added to the experience. I felt that the whole stay was like a "breath of fresh air". I enjoyed the freedom to be involved with the community if I so wished and appreciated the morning and evening prayers. A big thank you to you all for your provision of this much needed ministry. |
| |
| ... I came here tired out! I was allowed to be anonymous until I was ready to face people. I had time for myself, 'just to be' and to be left to think at my own pace. (Nobody asking me for help/advice etc). I didn't have to make a great deal of effort cooking as it was almost all done for me, food was lovely. I felt safe inside the Linhay Lodge and appreciated the garden to sit in without having to make conversation with people. The Sanctuary also allowed me the place to pray in in solitude. Thank you. |

... The accommodation and food were wonderful and I had no need to be concerned about them in any way. I had plenty of time to take stock by myself and no-one bothered me. I found the sanctuary a peaceful prayer space. Carl helped me to focus all that empty time productively. The massage was just what I needed and helped me more than I can say.
My stay at Sheldon might have been more enjoyable/helpful if... I hadn't been so scared of that silence to start with - but I got over that! Thank you all - I shall be back. |
| |
... We had time to stop! We hadn't realised how tired we were - but after lots of sleep, lots of space and free time; lots of good food; excellent accommodation .... and lots of love and care surrounding our stay here, we are ready for home, family and church! Thank you so much for looking after us so well. This is our second visit to Sheldon. We look forward to the next time.
Some suggestions/comments about the future: |
- Now that Flybe have opened up routes to Scotland - the North from Exeter (at reasonable fares), it may be worth some sort of renewed 'advertising campaign' to these Diocese/Areas. Just a thought. We flew from Newcastle and the entire journey, door to door was just under four hours.
- Have you ever considered a course/event/programme for clergy (and spouses) approaching retirement. We're in that bracket now (!!) with 4 years to go, before the official retirement age. It's going to be a huge change for us and we're not sure if we will be fully prepared (ie. ministry, housing, finances etc).
|
| |
| ... Thank you so much for a wonderful time - the view from David's Lodge has been very soothing and the peace has been a real gift. We've slept (a lot!), prayed (and dozed off again....), watched the birds, walked in the woods, had leisurely breakfasts and long uninterrupted conversations, relaxed in the jacuzzi and had long soaks in the bath. Thank you that there is no reception for our mobile 'phone (no-one can tell us off for turning it off!) Thank you for the privacy and space .... we hope to return. |
| |
| ... I was left alone, yet knew a discreet eye was kept on me. I appreciated the bird feeder. The silence and space came in generous portions. The soups! |
| |
... I thought I would drop you a line to let you know how I'm getting on having been back at work for just over a month.
It has not been easy to get back into things, but I am feeling stronger and more confident as the days go by. While I was off work my staff were magnificent, and made sure that when I returned it wasn't to shift a huge backlog of work. Family and friends have also been really good - I didn't know how much I am genuinely loved and cared for - I know that sounds silly, but when you bury yourself into a rabbit hole to defend yourself from even more misery you lose all sense of perspective.
My time with you at Sheldon was a real turning point for me. The deeply gentle kindness, space and availability of people in a totally non-threatening way,and my sessions with the two of you. I will never be able to express in words my thankfulness for what you gave me and what you continue to give to our churches. |
| |
| ... The atmosphere of the place was so obviously accepting and caring. It helped me to relax and then re-connect with the generosity of God. Being cut off from the outside world was the best way for me to find my feet again. |

... It was good - I was so glad to have that extra "space" in the lodge until 4pm on the Friday. It gave me time to breathe, deeply ... I've not forgotten, and often think of you and the community when I'm concentrating thus!). Thank you for forbearing with my late arrival too. I appreciated that. I felt the benefit of the rest when taking Sunday's worship - I could 'feel' the reserves below. Thank God.
The food seemed even tastier this time. The combination of flavours was a great pleasure; from savoury soups to orange/rhubarb meringue. The tangy raspberry puree on the crispy base sweet sponge bakewell was a delight!* The scrumiest I've had in a long long while. All this is a protracted way of saying a big thank you to all your community and helpers too ... for without the behind-the-scenes folk ... where would we be? Thanks again for looking after me so well. Much appreciated.
*so much nicer than predictable shop bought jam. |
| |
... The gentle welcome from Hillary was excellent.
Linhay lodges were superbly equipped, clean and comfortable.
Plentiful hot water was lovely!
Food was superb, and more of it than I could possibly need. I was worried about waste, leaving food behind.
Thank you for a helpful hour reflecting, with Carl.
A wonderful back massage from Jan.
And the jacuzzi was marvellous too, a really luxurious experience.
What was best? I think it was the combination of marvellous walks, a comfortable lodge to come back to and the serenity of the chapel. I love that chapel, especially the roof and the lighting. Three nights minimum? Yes, for me at least, I think that's about right. |
| |
... The place and the people were ready to receive me just as I was - from the first exchange of e-mails and brief phone conversations, right through my stay, this has been a safe and liberating place in which to do my own "work" with help when I needed/wanted it.
The design, furnishing and decoration of the buildings and the layout of the whole site speak to me gently and clearly of practical and permissive (in the best sense) love, hospitality and pastoral care.
The deeply gracious theological and practical combination of attention to my bodily needs for rest, relaxation, meals when I want them etc., through beautifully prepared environment, food, massage, jacuzzi, and attentions to my emotional and spiritual needs have spoken deeply of the depth of God's love and care and reality.
I've thought about whether I would have liked someone from the community to pray with me with or without laying on of hands and anointing. On balance, I think it has been best to be left to do my own work with God 1:1, and in any case I have received the laying on of hands with prayer in a deeply gentle and powerful way through massage from Jan. Others need to answer for themselves, but I wonder if the gentle offer of praying 'with' might be welcome sometimes. I have, throughout my time here, been deeply conscious of being held in prayer by the community here. A huge "thank you" for being available just when I needed you to be. |
| |
... Peaceful atmosphere and beautiful scenery.
The lodge was comfortable and clean.
A real place for meditation and reflection. |
| |
... It gave me space, quiet, peace and time to reflect on my difficulties. It gave me the space to pray. The assessment was exceptionally helpful - I'm sure that this will give me the launch pad to change my ministry for the good. There is no expectation of me here - wonderful. Staff were there if you needed them and not in your face! The standard is unbelievable. The massage and spa ... excellent. The best retreat ever!
My stay might have been more helpful if ...... there was may be a short time of input somewhere in the day for reflection ie. input from a community member.
Brilliant time - thank you! |
| |
| I had a wonderful few days break at The Sheldon Centre with The Society of Mary and Martha. I went on the Tuesday evening and was lodged in one of their very comfortable Lodges, gorgeous comfy chair and sofa that cuddle you. I chose the 'self-catering stocked larder option'. The Community leave plenty of food in the fridge and in the freezer, including some meals already prepared and ready to warm up in the microwave and fresh coffee and a very large cafetiere. On the Wednesday, I had an appointment with the jacuzzi - your own personal time with soft music and candles! In the afternoon I also took the opportunity for a 'one to one' session with someone from the Community. So by 5pm on the Wednesday, I was totally free of any appointments or demands upon my time until Friday morning. I could eat when I wanted, sleep when I liked and for as long as I liked, watch the telly or a video or read - yes, read with no interruptions!! |
| |
| |
... I very much enjoyed and hugely benefited from my fortnight at Sheldon and already sense that I will look back on it as significant turning point in my life. ...I honestly cannot think of anything that you could alter or add to improve the experience of time in a Linhay Lodge. The care with which the Lodge, the Linhay garden, and the sanctuary had been designed and equipped together with your unintrusive and respectful support, combined to create a deep sense of being held and healed. After I had left, I was reflecting on how simple you make the business of effective caring appear. However, I am also well aware that things look easy only when they have been mastered and that behind any such apparent simplicity there lies a considerable amount of sheer hard graft. ... Post Sheldon, I’ve also found myself thinking about the Stevie Smith poem that speaks of a person who is sinking into deep water but whose distress signals have been misinterpreted by those who might have helped him. If you don’t know it here’s the first verse -
Nobody heard him,
The dead man,
But still he lay moaning
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.
... I would guess that your capacity as a community to identify people’s distress signals correctly has saved a great many of us from going under.

- lack of pressure
- peace and quiet
- excellent hospitality
|
- David's Lodge could not have been more comfortable - even flowers!
- the variety of food provided has been first class
- the grounds are beautiful and the routes for walks excellent - I have so appreciated the peace and beauty for gradually allowing God to do His work in me
- as a community you have the great gift of being welcoming and supportive, without being intrusive. I have been so grateful for being able to join you for your evening worship - it has ben enormously helpful.
Thank you all very much for allowing me to come at short notice - I am returning home refreshed, restored and renewed, which I hope will be reflected in my future ministry.
|
| ..it provided me with a quiet space in which I could be completely alone and able to reflect, think, 'be' - and write up a case study. I also found it very nurturing - the larder stock was delicious - and all the other details - really clean room, flowers on table, huge bath towel etc etc - made me feel really pampered! Thank you. |
| |
- the rooms and facilities and food
- the location and views
- the care of the community members, especially during the blackout [a power cut!]
- the peace and quiet
|
...Now I have returned home, I wish to write to thank you for the wonderful hospitality you gave me during my few days at Sheldon. Words cannot express how much it meant to me to be able to relax in such a prayerful and peaceful environment.
David's Lodge was a real haven of comfort in which to reflect and allow God to refocus my vision for the future. The beautiful grounds were a tonic and a place to dump my spiritual rubbish - what a good job that was invisible! The seats in strategic places and especially the swinging seats were a joy to me and I appreciated the chance to watch the wildlife.
The highlight of each day was the 5pm meditation, which seemed to be 'tailor made' for where I was 'at'.
So I want to say a very big and sincere 'thank you' to those of you I met and those behind the scenes, for caring so well for me. Your attention to detail, was first class and I much appreciated your unobtrusive support. |
| |
| ...Thank you so much for another welcome space. You provide such a valuable resource - particularly a safe and stable place among the 'changes and chances' of the fleeting world that I can depend on. |
| |
.......Peace and walks. Deer and blue tits. He's everywhere (especially at Sheldon!) - huge thanks.
For the jacuzzi - fab for spiritual reflective and physical relaxation and restoration - wow! Especially for Jan's massage - the best ever! and for the care and facilities. |
| |

|
| |
.. of the comfort of the Linhay lodges.
the peace and quiet of the centre set in beautiful countryside
the care of the staff
just having some space and time to work through some difficult questions about future ministry and current circumstances
the facilities are wonderful - especially the Jacuzzi |
| |
| I would like to give to you and your staff my heartfelt gratitude for your hospitality for my retreat. I would be grateful if you could pass my great thanks to each of your staff, please? I hope to see you all again. |
| |
I am grateful - more than I can say - for the unconditional welcome and hospitality I've received from you over the last few days. I've appreciated your unobtrusive style, and the numerous little touches of delicate sensitivity to the range of possible needs of those who come to the Linhay - including the teddy in the Sanctuary!
I feel rested and, above all, refreshed mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and so able, in God's strength and grace, to go on in the ministerial and family situations here.
Special thanks to you, Sarah, for your book which I discovered in the Library, and to you, Carl, for listening to me. I found your comments, questions and suggestions very helpful.
Thank you all so much for the unique oasis you provide at Sheldon. Every blessing for you and your invaluable ministry. |
| |
.... It was good to have space and quiet and to be left alone!
Thanks to such a helpful staff whose discretion and good nature was most evident, |
| |
| ... the peace, warm welcome and atmosphere of being somewhere which has been soaked with prayer. A real sanctuary which enabled us to retreat in order to advance. |
| |
. I needed a break and some solitude to refocus, and the loving way the Linhay lodge had been furnished, the kindness of the staff in helping in every way, and the tastiness of the food supplied made my stay relaxed, enjoyable, peaceful and I was able to spend time listening to God. Thank you so much for a lovely stay. |
| |
.. beautiful situation
. supportive atmosphere
..the fact it's there when needed. |
| |
.. I want to thank you for making me so welcome and comfortable at Sheldon - for the facility in itself and for your joint input in particular. Although some of my feelings at the time were of isolation and loneliness, the time was enormously helpful : the combination of the input of meetings, time for reflection and space for relaxation have been very effective..Already I believe I have been able to take a more positive and confident approach to my relationship and my pattern of activities. "Small satisfactions". |
| |
.. I could soak in all the love, care, comfort and prayers that are part of Sheldon. Thank you for the delicious food and wonderful lodge - there was everything I needed and more. Each day was full of simplicity and surprises. Looking forward to the next time! |
| |
| |
|
|
| |
.. Thank you and the community for a lovely few days with you last week. It met every expectation and we returned nourished. |
| |
I am writing to thank you so much for both my recent stays at Sheldon. It is difficult to put into words quite how precious this time was for me - and being so blessed with the weather was a real bonus. In spite of my plague-ridden status, the work week was most enjoyable. The company, food and lack of need for much decision-making were brilliant! I shall not forget the sight of the stage being 'hoovered', or of the Bishop preaching in a drain. ...being able to keep all the windows open in the lodge - at home, security means that I can only open the window of the room I'm actually in. At Sheldon I felt as if my inner windows were open too. Wonderful. |
| |
Thank you so much for giving me all that I've needed to find refreshment and restoration after an extremely difficult year. I've come to a crossroads in my life and you've helped to create an environment in which I've been able to pray and reflect upon 'which way now?' A special thank you to Sarah for helping to hi-light some areas I need to work upon, to Jan for the wonderful food and for giving me my first ever massage; I didn't realise what I'd been missing! To Tracy and Penny for their friendly, open approach; both with a real gift for welcoming people and to Carl and Sue for underpinning everything with prayer, and for being open to God's vision for the Sheldon Centre. With many thanks again and lots of love and prayers. |
| |
Thank you for all the time you gave me during my stay at Sheldon earlier in the year. It was a valuable time away and much needed. |
| |
. I feel everything was provided that I could possibly need in order to rest and relax and allow my body, mind and spirit to be restored and renewed. The personal and sensitive touch to everything in the lodge, I found very moving, as if a 'friend' really knew me quite personally, and understood what I needed. The silence and solitude were both very important, as was the sanctuary. I also really enjoyed the TV very much. I feel more 'myself' and more human. So, thank you to all who made this possible. I also found the grounds and the walks around great. |
| |
- The care-full attention to detail meant that lodge, grounds, sacred spaces, information and people all harmonised in a warm cry of 'welcome'.
- Without engaging in prayer - or even 'God-talk' - with anyone else there was a palpable sense of being cared for and prayed for.
- I was dead impressed by the skill with which the one-on-one sessions were timed and handled - for me a real purging experience, but also profoundly affirming. Very different from encounters I've had elsewhere that make you feel a failure for daring to be honest about difficult emotions.
- Special thanks to whoever cleaned the lodge - I came down full of summer asthma and left miles better. Relaxation and clean air helped, but a dust-free environment and clean soft furnishings were much appreciated!
|
| |
|
|
| |
..it gave us time and space to unwind, plus incomparable quiet - absence of phones etc - no disturbances whatsoever from family week taking place at the same time.
Community prayers - helpful. Also the Lord opened up the difficult areas for us to discuss. |
| |
May I take this opportunity of thanking you and Carl and all the staff for the wonderful way in which your community ministered to me. The lodge was beautiful, the food was amazing and the whole sense of peace and quiet was therapeutic in itself...Be assured that I will have no hesitation in recommending Sheldon to any who may ask me about a place to "retreat" to. |
| |
Thank you for a lovely few days. Everyone said I looked better for it. I enjoyed the opportunities for stillness and found Sarah's input helpful there. I also appreciated the talks with Carl. Thank you too, for the delicious meals and the beautifully prepared lodge. |
| |
| |
|
|
| |
.. great thought has gone into the concept and putting it into action. I have been so comfortable. It has been wonderful to get away for a few days - I feel much refreshed. |
| |
You have put so much thought and care into providing these lodges.
No-one bothered me - I could just be
Whatever kind of surroundings I needed weren't far away - thank you for all the different corners in the Linhay Garden , and for the privacy of the sanctuary.
I came, as no doubt many do, for a time of peace, but found fresh guidance for ministry when I return, too. |

. I found rest. Was spoilt! by the wonderful accommodation and food. The Sheldon community were welcoming, and I found the sessions with Carl helpful. I found the daily prayers helpful in giving me a couple of fixed points in an otherwise unfixed day. I was able to study, walk and listen to the quietness and most of all God. Thank you everyone. The meals were brilliant, the fresh food lovely, but just a few mixed herbs would have added that je ne ce quio... I shall be back - if it is another 20 years I'll be a pensioner looking for a chance to weed the gardens. Thank you again. |

.. of the safe and supporting silence and space. I am thankful for the grace found here at Sheldon. Love and light have been received with a knowledge of being upheld. Thank you for your loving care. Accommodation just right and the food excellent (which you left in the fridge/freezer). The gentle walks in the grounds were much appreciated. |

You have thought of everything in terms of excellent accommodation. I have been able to enjoy walks and the gardens in such quiet and beautiful surroundings. There is an atmosphere of calm, prayerful care which needs no words. You have enabled a busy parish priest switch 'off' from work and 'on' to God in a way not possible at home for very long. Thank you so much. |

.Everything has been prepared and thought through with such care, and a real understanding of what is needed. Beautiful surroundings, beautifully tended gardens, which invite prayer and enjoyment. Thank you very much. |

You provided the totally uncluttered space I needed.
The soups were wonderful - especially the cauliflower and stilton
The early purple orchids everywhere were glorious
Special thank you to Sarah for giving up part of her evening so I could have a Jacuzzi to begin the 'unwind' |

| My holiday is fast drawing to a close. It has been wonderful. So restful and full of peace - so much more than I ever imagined. I can't thank my nephew enough for having introduced Sheldon to me and to think he used to come when it was a farm and he was about 8. He is now 53. I have been living in luxury for the past week and so comfortable. It is good to know that we too are raising hearts and voices in praise at the same time. |

... of the silence, the peace and the unobtrusive care.
The attention to detail eg. flowers on the table, a tray set for tea, shoe cleaning materials and a washing machine. Constant hot water and hippo for a bath companion.
I found the collection of walks very useful and the opportunity to range the countryside conducive to prayer and reflection. Time was too short - at least 10 days? or perhaps to come more frequently? Thank you. |

- timelessness
- every comfort provided - love Teddy
- not having to talk to anyone but I knew they were there if I needed
- jacuzzi and massage - absolute BLISS!
- walking maps incredible especially to a complete dimwit!
- Sanctuary was just that
- food was yummy, especially banana loaf!
Thank you to everyone - you are all part of a very special and God-filled community. Thank you for the privilege of being with you.

| Thank you very much for having me to stay over the Easter period. It was a real joy and privilege to be with you all and to enjoy the beauty and peace of Sheldon. |

.. Everything was laid on for us. We could just relax with no pressure. Thank you so much, especially for the home-made food and soups - broccoli and stilton was the tops! |
| |
..the Linhay and the wider resources of Sheldon were as therapeutic as ever. The big bed and the sofa are welcome additions; the 'ready meals' remain in a class of their own. I'm impressed by the fact that the lodges are virtually as immaculate as when they first opened, reflecting the Society's high standard of care. |

The accommodation was of a high standard with thoughtful, homely touches.
The outlook/views were restful
There was space for me to be; no one "interfered".
There is an atmosphere of peace.
I could have stayed longer! Thank you for providing this place. |
| |
Thank you for the God-filled space of Sheldon - I continue to shine with His glory! Even the vicar remarked upon my shining! Thank you for your unobtrusive loving prayer and care and I look forward to returning. |

Thank you for your kind hospitality. We feel truly refreshed and set up for next week. |
| |
Thank you very much for your welcome, and for all you and your team have done to make our stay so restful and enjoyable. |

We found God's peace here, and His sense of humour (eg., 'laughter' in Thomas's Lodge).
appreciated freedom (including being able to join in prayers as and when wanted)
grateful for being able to purchase milk (when we weren't energetic enough to walk to Christow shop)
impressed with the new reception area, chapel and the general development, and pray that God will continue to bless the community here and use SMM to provide this facility for clergy etc., to be renewed for more effective ministry.
Loved the luxurious Linhay Lodge! |
