Residential Self-Esteem Training Report

he weekend residential training on self-esteem was arranged for the young mothers to give them an opportunity to work on self-development.
The group consisted of ten teenage mums, age 17 to 20 years, and their children. Some of the group knew each other well and others were new to the group. One of the aims of the residential was to help these young mums get to know each other and bond as a group.
The training consisted of four 2-hour workshops spread across the weekend. The training focused on raising awareness around self-esteem, recognition of their own responsibilities and self worth, and techniques to boost self esteem. There were also activities aimed at getting to know each other better. The group responded very well to the training and participated with enthusiasm.
There was plenty of opportunity for the mums to spend time with their children and each other helping to build positive relationships, which will develop on their return.
We were unable to go to our usual residential facility because of excessive cost, but after a hunt around on the internet, we found Sheldon which was a two-hour drive away near Exeter. This was the first time we had used Sheldon as a residential venue. The accommodation and facilities were excellent and spotlessly clean and the young mums were very impressed. Some were disappointed that there was not a mobile phone signal or TV aerial, but the trainers found that the isolation of the venue added to the success of the training and the cohesion of the group.
The kitchen was extremely well equipped and big enough for several people to work in together. The mums shared child care and domestic tasks fairly and worked really well as a team. Meal times ran very smoothly.
There was enough space to run a good creche for the babies, and the surrounding woodland and animals were great for the older children.
There were many benefits to the residential. The scenery provided a peaceful and relaxing environment to get away from it all for the weekend and the high standard of the venue made the young mums feel valued.
As a group the young mums built trust and friendships, and demonstrated teamwork skills. They supported each other well when they needed either practical or emotional help. It was great for them to spend their free time together when the children were all asleep.
On a personal level the young mums developed and grew in confidence. The training was effective in building self-esteem and highlighting the positive aspects of each individual and the amount of responsibility they cope with as a parent. The final workshop incorporated 'goal-setting' and there will be follow-up support from the tutors at the Project to ensure t hat the teen mums achieve their targets and receive whatever encouragement is necessary.
General feedback from the group was very positive about every aspect of the residential. Included are some evaluation comments from the group:

"I really enjoyed being away with just young mums because I've never been away with just females and was able to speak out".
"I thought it was a fantastic weekend. Everyone seems a lot happier and more comfortable together, everyone helped each other out, it was just brilliant".
