| The time at Sheldon was lovely. I've been attending Karen's workshops for years and appreciate them greatly. It's good to be having them now in such a splendid place as Sheldon. |

| We are welcomed and offered great, undemanding hospitality. I love the space and chance to wander into the surrounding fields and lanes and to be greeted by friendly (or one friendly) Manx Loachtan sheep - that made my walk - patting a sheep!! Really and looking into his/her eyes . . . I would have found my stay at Sheldon more enjoyable if I had been able to talk to a volunteer member of staff (who happened to say she was a retired priest) at the dinner table without being told the conversation was off-limits. I was not talking to a fellow visitor after all. It annoyed me. [Webeditor: sorry, we recognise the rule does annoy some people, but the no clergy shop talk is a rule everyone signs up to and yes, it does apply to all conversations at the mealtable, bar, etc, whether to a volunteer or fellow guest.] |
| |
| Very stimulating input; friendly and engaging group and centre staff/volunteers/community members, as well as good food; very pleasant environment and notably wonderful accommodation in the Pig Pen. Karen provided us with very stimulating input and shared her own story and insights admirably. I think that it may be advisable if Karen is going to quote scripture for the chapter and verse to be quoted, rather than a rather vague, cursory recollection. It felt odd that although the warden was on site he did not introduce himself to the group, jarring with otherwise exemplary hospitality. |
| |
| It was particularly interesting to explore and learn about the Enneagram. It is a help when so much of my time is spent with other people in my Ministry. I would like to come back next year for Part 2. I was very impressed with the efficiency and cleanliness and above all the friendliness and thoughtfulness of everyone who is at Sheldon. Everything was just right. Sheldon is a most beautiful place. |

| Thanks to everyone for Constructing Cooperation; a very high quality, skilful presentation by two great guys who know their stuff. I got back yesterday and am feeling lots better again. |

I found my stay useful because there was a lot of useful material to take away and apply; it was very relevant and practical, lovely hospitality and local walks too! It would have been more enjoyable if various members of the group hadn’t excused themselves, on a number of occasions, from the house rule ‘no clergy shop talk’ – this was disregarded by lay and ordained people and it made my stay quite difficult at times.[Webeditor: we're very sorry we failed to pick up on this at the time - an issue we always try to be really tight on. Our apologies.] |
| |
| The course really scratched where I itched! I wish it had gone on a bit longer and that my room had been en suite. [Webeditor: see our future plans for the Long Barn.] |
| |
| I found my stay at Sheldon thoroughly refreshing: once you get here, everything has been thought of, you don't have to remember to do things or be responsible for making things happen and that is instantly restful.Being close to the animals I have found very therapeutic on previous occasions. Re: the fox/chicken problem - at my family's smallholding a double electric fence (inner and outer) keeps the fox at bay - don't know if it would work here. |
| |
| Good company, good hospitality and a course which did exactly what it said on the tin. |
| |
| The subject matter and manner of presentation played together as music. It had life! Again, being at Sheldon has been refreshing and comfortable. Thank you. |
| |
| I found my stay at Sheldon enjoyable because of the peace and quiet, not talking shop (I got very annoyed with a group which was doing so, but plucked up the courage to move away from it!), the gentle, calm hospitality. The excellent food and superb course content. I would have found my stay more enjoyable if the loo and bath facilities had been a bit more up-to-date [Webeditor: see plans for the Long Barn] and it had been much darker at night - I was really saddened by the amount of light that was still about during the night, altough I understand about the safety reasons. NO talking shop! [Webeditor: not sure which lights are referred to. All our external lights are low energy, and we rely on guests to turn off internal ones before retiring at night.] |
| |
- the course was excellent in every respect
- the welcome and care experienced were good as usual
- wonderful food
- accommodation adequate - nice & warm, clean & comfortable, despite being the weakest link! (but it will be lovely if your plans for improvement come to fruition)
- I love the walks, wildlife and the daffodils.
I would like to have had the programme in advance, particularly to know that there was the option to stay on for the night after the end of the course. Practical note: the guttering outside my Long Barn Room 8 (the join) drips steadily, even when it isn't raining and is noisy as a result.
|
| |
| The daily rhythm is well structured and works. The food and level of comfort are good. The atmosphere is conducive to both silent contemplation - enjoyment of nature, etc.and focussed work. The grounds are lovely and the resident community and volunteers make visitors (ie me) feel cared for and special. The tiniest of things in the grand order (and I know finances are always stretched) but an en suite shower and loo would have been the icing on a very enjoyable cake. [Webeditor: more comfort on the way - see our future plans for the Long Barn.] |

| There is such an enjoyable, friendly, safe atmosphere. Although this general comment is true of all retreat centres, it is particularly true of Enneagram workshops where Karen facilitates a safe and creative group in which to study and live the universal truths of the Enneagram. Everything - arrangements, meals, etc work very well. |
| |
| Beautiful surroundings. Helpful, caring, friendly staff and volunteers. Good food. Wonderful peace. It would be helpful if there were a map of key roads in the area (not just written directions). We were staying off site and needed to find petrol stations, motorway, etc. |
| |
| In such beautiful surroundings, with the colours of autumn, there was such an easy atmosphere for our group to open up to each other and so go deeper ourselves into areas of understanding for the Enneagram to help our growth and developing relationship with God. |
| |
| Practically, we were well looked after as usual! Spiritually, the course helped me. I came struggling and found real help. I was with a great group of people, none of whom I knew well before, but who were companions on the journey. |
| |
| As ever, the food was delicious, the bedroom was welcoming and comfortable. I appreciated the flowers and the course was well worth coming to. The 2 previous Enneagram courses I've come to (in May and October 2007) were attended by 8 or 9 of us and were fine, but having a group of 21 was great! Not overwhelming as I'd feared it might be when I heard how many we were. |
| |
| All good, it's a lovely environment. Thank you. A reminder in your info - to say that there is no mobile phone reception would be useful so that we can tell family and friends not to expect to hear from us! [Webeditor: We do have a payphone!] |
| |
| My stay was enjoyable due to the welcoming atmosphere and care from the people and wonderful surroundings. The course was excellent. |
| |
| It is always good to share in a Karen Webb workshop. Sheldon made a great impression as a beautiful, peaceful place run by kind and efficient people. I was very comfortable and the vegetarian food was excellent. Only one very small problem - I found my bedroom too warm at night. |

| It's low key, it's natural, relaxing but spiritually focussed. The food is excellent. Altogether a stimulating workshop/retreat |
| |
| This was very interesting and enjoyable. Gordon and Dorothy were a mellow and relaxed duo of presenters, which made a good atmosphere in which most people were able to share difficulties, etc. as well as have a good laugh. Found it difficult to get into the first session, being tired after the journey and feeling generally a bit flat. Had it been earlier in the year, it would have been light enough outside for people to go out and collect some nice natural object, leaf etc. to focus on and this would have brought the Via Positiva to life, but perhaps I've got the wrong end of the stick. When we were supposed to create something, playlet, picture, symbolic action or whatever to illustrate issues we were concerned about, we didn't have nearly enough time to prepare! Ghastly panic when we had to perform it and were making it up as we went along. My friend who was in the other group said they felt the same. These are only trivial points which could easily be dealt with . Because otherwise the balance of leisure and talks was very good so you felt there was plenty of input but relaxation as well. Once I got into it, I found it very stimulating and lots of connections clicked into place. To be honest, though I spend much time with various Bible commentaries when preparing sermons and Bible study sessions, and get stuck in for hours on end, I can't say I read much in the way of serious theology, so it was really nice to have it explained so painlessly and I took loads of notes. As usual at Sheldon, congenial company, old friends and new. I felt very indulged to be in that lovely room in the Pound House once more. |

| Lovely two day break, very well supported by staff team. Highly enjoyable, wonderful location and countryside and nice veggie food. I did find the mattress on the bed very hard. |
| |
- The workshop was excellent
- The homemade food was superb
- The setting was beautiful
- The house is extremely comfortable and unobtrusively well run.
- I would have found my stay more comfortable if the beds had been a little bit softer. |
| |
| It was a chance for us to get away on our own and relax, do something together and spend time talking away from work and the demands of our young son. The buildings and accommodation were so welcoming in their fittings, cleanliness and facilities. The community were welcoming and helpful, but not intrusive. The timetable felt relaxed. The course was just what we wanted - an A,B,C of massage to learn and use straightaway. Food was very yummy! We wish we had the time, money and babysitting possibilities to stay the night before the course started. |
| |
| Sheldon has a very relaxed atmosphere in which to unwind and allow yourself just a little bit of pampering, and the community members are very supportive. The course was informative and encouraging, with enough intimacy to make you feel free from embarrassment and free to fail, but with enough space to avoid intrusion. The instructor was excellent both as a practitioner and as a teacher, giving clear and sensible advice alongside plenty of encouragement, whilst creating an environment of friendly professionalism and mutual respect. Wholeheartedly recommended! It might be useful to have a follow-up course designed to correct all the mistakes we've started to make in our practice! |
| |
| Excellent workshop - Phliippa was a good teacher and created a lovely atmosphere in her sessions. Food good, as always. Bed was very comfortable thanks to the foam mattress and duvet kindly provided for me. Having the Fat Pigeon open before supper was good. Nice to socialise over a drink. Thanks to everyone for your hospitality. |

| ... Enneagram was a better experience than I expected - though I'm not sure what my expectations were. Karen Webb was highly knowledgeable in her subject and held the group safely. A valuable additional tool in my spiritual journey. As always, the lodge was comfortable and private and Sheldon was peaceful. |
| |
... Sarah phoned me up to remind me to come! The sun was shining, the bluebells were out, the lambs were gamboling, the food was splendid, the tea and coffee was on tap, the room was lovely and clean. The content was presented with love and patience, the programme allowed space for thinking through, the emphasis on prayer/meditation as a way in was very helpful. Helen's availability for taking things through, clear boundaries.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I find the contrived sales pitches a bit wearing. |
| |
... I was pleased to have a room with en-suite facilities - it added to the fact that I was attending the course for its benefits, but also coming to Sheldon for an opportunity of relaxation and being cared for! I am extremely grateful for the use of the 'hearing aid system'. Thank you! I am also grateful for the sensitive assistance I was given by community members and volunteers over the episode of needing to be in contact with my daughter on the Tuesday. I welcomed the fact that we could make drinks at any time and could take them with us to wherever we were!
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I cannot really think of anything to add here! Because of the need to contact my daughter in the free time I was driving out to find a mobile signal - rather than walking around the grounds. Also if the weather had been better, I would have investigated the grounds - a factor that was out of your control! |

~ The course was enlightening.
~ It was well presented and relevant to me.
~ Karen is a good teacher and very knowledgeable.
~ Food - good quality, I'm a fussy eater, but I felt very well catered for.
~ Accommodation - comfortable. [Webeditor: more comfort on the way - see our future plans for the Long Barn.]
~ Staff - all very helpful.
Difficult to find any faults. The weather was good too. Thank you all. |

| ... of the prayerful, restful atmosphere, beautiful surroundings (helped by lovely weather!), good food (more of me is going home than came!) and excellent Enneagram course - explored in some depth through experiential learning. Also, it was a lovely surprise to have an en-suite room! |
| |
| ... the course was most interesting and helpful, but the wonderfully peaceful atmosphere at Sheldon made it a special place to be. The weather was superb and the stillness when walking was wonderful. Thank you for the sumptuous meals too. Hopefully will be back soon. |
| |
~ As a 'novice' to the Enneagram, I think Karen Webb gave an excellent and clear intro to the model, with plenty of time for going a little deeper into each 'type', and opportunities to ask Qs about your own likely type in a safe environment.
~ The structure/balance of the days - with a big chunk of the afternoon for my own space, - was really helpful.
~ This was my first stay in one of the Pig Pens - so beautifully and tastefully done, with marvelous attention to detail - eg. the bird-feeder (and lots of birds!) just by the panoramic window with all its wonderful and restful views.
~ As always, your attention to 'understated hospitality' and imaginative food made me feel immediately welcome and 'at ease' again.
~ I wish there was a cheaper way of getting from Exeter, St David's, when the buses have stopped - outside of your control ... Could you do something proactive about lift sharing for arrivees? It is probably too complicated ... |

| ... The course was very well presented (as one might expect, given the leaders) and there was a great variety of writing, as I had anticipated. There was also exposure to a lot of different spiritual and other ideas and writings. The activities were varied and I would have thought there would be something to catch everyone's spirit and imagination, however diverse the people were. There was also freedom to do one's own thing, if that were preferred. As one would expect from G and D, it was very empathetic, encouraging, open and relaxed. Sheldon, as always, provides excellent food and quiet, unobtrusive service ..... I very much appreciated the lovely flower arrangement in my room and have already mentioned this to someone. I always appreciate the hospitality and atmosphere, the chapel (MM&L), the services and the beautiful surroundings. It's all so peaceful and uplifting. I also felt great pleasure (as always) from the garden 'bits' - (flowers), birds and animals and also the photographs everywhere ie. a lovely leaf outside the loo and 'the huge view' one in the dining room. I have been told they're Sarah's. If so, thanks, and they're very good!! |
| |
... the whole atmosphere of the place is peaceful, friendly, supportive. The community and other helpers deal with all the pressures and daily bustle, and leave guests free to relax/get on with their own agenda.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if .... there had been a free evening between the end of one course and the start of the next, quite different one. It was a bit too much to get my head around, rather stressful. Also the Write for Life included far too much input, too much good material offered and not enough time for reflecting and working on it. It could have been a 5 day course with no extra material. |
| |
... I have felt cared for and welcomed. The quality of the physical surroundings and the sensitivity of the hospitality gives a strong message of loving support. I have felt quite overwhelmed to realise that so much is done expressly for "people in ministry" - for me!
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I had perhaps picked a quieter event ... I realised that I probably just needed space and silence - but that was my own fault, and I will look forward to coming another time now that I know it feels so safe to be here. |
| |
| ... It's so calm and peaceful and the scenery is beautiful. Everyone is so welcoming, kind and considerate, the food wholesome and plentiful. The simple worship (with no loud music in the morning when I attended!) just as I like it. The Pig Pen was comfortable and cheerful. It was such a pleasure to write at a table by the window with its splendid view of hills and trees, and to watch the visiting birds. |
| |
| ... I was warm and comfortable physically from the start, and the welcome was so friendly I immediately felt safe. The members of staff were particularly helpful over the trouble with my car, and got it sorted out. The worst part of it all is leaving. Many many thanks for an ideal couple of days. |
| |
| ... We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... one member of the Write for Life group had not been on it, as she severely diminished our enjoyment of it. I also found one person's presence quite 'dangerous' and potentially destructive to individual and group process. I found the facilitators of the 'Write for Life' course to be lacking in direction, confidence and focus. I suppose it is important not to assume that because they have 'a good CV' they will actually be good facilitators! This is hard to write, but it is my honest reaction to the course. |
| |
... The course was extremely interesting. It enabled one to look back and close a chapter, to contemplate on where one was now and to prepare for the mainly unknown future. The fact that Gordon Jeff was prepared to read a piece I had written was extremely encouraging. The food was, as always, delicious and the bedroom spotless and cosy. [Webeditor: more comfort on the way - see our future plans for the Long Barn.] Other members of the group were very congenial.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... I forgot to bring a bath towel. A spare one would have been welcome! It took ages before I learnt how to turn on the bedside lamp! As the workshop lasted a short time, it might have been good if the group had sometimes been split into 3's or 4's so that members could read their work out loud. A group of 12 strangers can be intimidating! |
| |
... all three really, enjoyable because it is Sheldon - ethos, countryside, peace and thoughtful care taken over everything. Those little details - like some small flowers in one's room. Thank you. Now the course - by day 2 I was settled into it and felt the group had just begun to get to know each other and relax. Felt that more "group forming" time at the start would have possibly helped everyone. Content was definitely more than a 2 and a bit days worth. It was challenging, but nourishing. Gordon and Dorothy worked hard and sensitively to make it work and were very gracious with time given to us individually. Felt this was a "tester" of more similar 'Write for Life' with a bit of change here and there - this was all talked about at the end of the course.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... the course had been + 1 more day to allow content breathing space. Thank you to one and all. |
| |
... of the beautiful weather, sunrise on the hills on opposite side of the valley, helpfulness and cheerfulness of staff, peace and quiet, and freedom to walk everywhere (despite restrictions imposed because of tree work) the simple but prayerful worship.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... we had been told from the beginning that church "shop" talk was strongly discouraged! Also if the blankets on the beds were a bit larger! |

~ It was great staying in Linhay Lodge again - so comfortable, peaceful and just lovely chill-out time.

We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... we could have stayed for longer! |

~ It's been a nice group of people
~ The course has been well led
~ The place is beautiful. Enjoyable food. Thank you very much.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... A small thing - the light going on every time you leave the bedroom seems a little unnecessary - I realise it may be health and safety, but would a night light suffice. It feels a bit like being caught in the headlights and can give quite a fright!! |

~ The course was done excellently
~ Sheldon, as ever, was friendly, welcoming and the best place to stay and very good food.
Thanks for everything. |

~ Lovely surroundings
~ Care from the community
~ Good food
~ Brilliant course
~ Enjoyed the Fat Pigeon!
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ...

~ Having been used to coming here for retreats, not groups, it felt a bit strange - a different experience. |

Exploring the new acres was a joy. Thank you for all you did for us. |

| ... It's a beautiful setting to breathe in and smile at. The course tutor was superb, the pace, explanation and technique was well comprised and I enjoyed the experience of the tutor and the other pupils and found the knowledge of the Enneagram explained by Karen to be enjoyable and enlivening. The staff at Sheldon were interesting, lively and friendly in their approach and in conversation. The food was exquisite and the efficiency of the serving was exemplary. I've had a great time and thank you and wish you all the best. |

... Karen Webb was a superb and sensitive leader. The group was a good size and worked well together.
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... some freshly brewed coffee was available - especially at breakfast! |
| |
~ Excellent course and leader
~ Comfortable and ensuite accommodation
~ Well designed buildings with good facilities
~ Beautiful chapels
~ Enjoyed meeting the community and volunteers over meals
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... we had an opportunity to greet other members of the community, albeit briefly. It seemed strange to attend worship with them, but not to have an opportunity to say hello. |

...It was a good course with an excellent leader and a good group. Food - excellent. Setting - fantastic and the care ie. not having to wash-up was wonderful.
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... my room had not been so cramped, even on my own. I did not appreciate having to go downstairs and through a public room to get to a "quiet" loo. Having only one wash-hand basin between potentially 12+ guests was not comfortable. [Webeditor: we're starting on the next £1m fundraising to do something about this. See our future plans for the Long Barn. In the meantime plenty downstairs and never sharing between more than 6 - 8 people upstairs.] |

| ... thank you for the wonderful hospitality and welcome you gave during the Myers Briggs course. A week on, I have been reflecting and looking at the beautiful bookmark with the five lovely faces on it - how I wish I had got a Jan massage - after she filled me up with more second helpings than I can remember ever having. I still have Sarah's welcome envelope as I got out of the taxi, lovingly blu-tacked to reception and the fun of the bar and the chat on Friday evening will live long in my memory. On Saturday morning I found the peace and quiet of the library - what a beautiful place. I know you guys have been running Sheldon for some time but, let me say that, for someone coming 'new' into Sheldon, the love and care you showed us all was quite incredible. I will certainly be back.... |
| |
| ... the people were very friendly and helpful - the staff and Dorothy and Gordon who led the course were lovely. The course itself was really stimulating, interesting and helpful. The accommodation was very comfortable, attractive and yet simple - the food was good and plentiful (we have good appetites!). The folk on the course were also friendly and it was a really good group. Thank you for a very good couple of days. |
| |
... it gave me time out to learn, think, pray and be still in my otherwise hectic lifestyle. The beauty of God's creation is a blessing which is not always so obvious living 7 days a week in London.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... a) there had been a large ordnance survey map on display so I knew where I was. b) If arrival times had been co-ordinated for folk arriving at Exeter station so that taxi costs could have been shared. |
| |

... Dorothy and Gordon are gracious and learned facilitators. I learned so much about myself and others and had a lot of fun too. I would like to receive mailing for any follow-up - non-dominant/shadow types - if this is on offer. It would be very useful.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... no negatives. Sheldon does us so much good. Morning and evening prayer and compline very reviving. Quiet day also very helpful. SILENCE was a new and good experience for me. Accommodation (me in room 1 in Pound House) lovely - my own en-suite - luxury! ........ Food excellent - must give up lunch for lent as a result! Would like to be a volunteer for domestic duties if I can fit it in with annual leave. Thank you all so much!! |
| |
... it is so peaceful. Everything provided. The care and concern is so obvious and yet it is subtle too. This is my third time in approximately 5 months, so you've guessed I like it. I have always had the glorious Pig Pen which for me and my needs is just perfect. It is hard to pick the 'best' thing, because it is all lovely - the chutney, the care, the cake, the community. I find the chapel ambience really constructive and the community prayers are very special for me and to me. Not to mention the sloe gin!
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if .... I could stay every other week! (I am being very serious - it would be wonderful though. I don't think I'd get bored.) The community prayers take place in the new chapel. It feels sometimes that guests are not allowed there except for these times - I may be wrong. Also, it would be lovely if the bar was open after dinner for a while too, though people do gather with hot drinks. |
| |
| ... it was excellent. Gordon and Dorothy presented their material in an extremely interesting and varied way. There were examples, activities and humour as well as information and this made the reception of much material easier. There was also built into the programme repetition of the key points in different ways. Also, participants were involved. The community provided an unobtrusive service, good food and an excellent atmosphere. I have said it before - the chapel is very beautiful and very moving. |

| ... It is a lovely, hospitable place. The two night course was a last minute decision to try to help me move on with using stories. The course wasn't quite what I expected, but was full of treasures to be found then and later (I've bought a puppet for the parish!) I was very tired:- covering maternity leave and felt I could pick up the peace where I'd left off after my first visit. Thank you. |

... all Sheldon resources excellent and a joy for me to experience living in the re-built "Pound House".
John Taylor - very likeable and amusing bloke. Well thought out workshops. Tales Told was a totally new aspect of life for me. |
| |
| ... Food and situation wonderful as usual - thanks Jan! 'Tales Told' was very relaxing and stimulating at the same time. It didn't meet the needs of the whole group, but maybe our experiences/requirements of storytelling were too wide. The Quiet Day was refreshing for the chance to enjoy the countryside on the best day of the week. |
| |
... We joined this group unexpectedly when we arrived at Sheldon.... The leader, John Taylor, was very welcoming and his passion and love for the people with learning disabilities with whom he worked was inspiring. We had a very enjoyable time particularly on the second day when there was more participation and the group was allowed to "gel".
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... If John runs more groups (which I hope he will) I think more participation earlier would help to free up the group. We have chosen to come and can be trusted to look after ourselves and each other! This is not a criticism ... just a comment - perhaps laying out the ground rules together at the start would have been a help too. No negatives about Sheldon. It's a special place. Thank you. |
| |
~ Very disappointing.
~ Mainly being talked at.
~ Too little interaction.
~ Too specific to disability.
~ Expected to look at adults telling their stories.
~ Not much relevance to life outside disability therapy.
~ Group needed more self determination from beginning. |
| |
... Great accommodation, wonderful catering, friendly atmosphere. I love the Sanctuary space (above the Linhay). I also met some interesting people and will be keeping in touch with two of them.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... the speaker had encouraged or made use of feedback. I would have liked the opportunity to share where I was coming from, what my interest was and what my hopes were from the course. As it was, I found the course almost exclusively focused on the needs of adults with learning difficulties, which is not my area at all. Monday's programme was over-full with no built-in space for rest or reflection. I felt the speaker needed to be more aware of his client group (ie. us, the course participants). |

Thank you. It was brilliant to have food provided which I could eat too - I know I am difficult at the moment and it was good to have help and understanding. Thank you. |

~ it was welcoming, warm and cosy
~ people kept finding me lost and set me on the right road
~ the food was outstandingly good - this included special diet
~ the bed was comfy and the lighting was so good to read by
~ the shower and loo worked
~ the course on Journalling was engrossing and the techniques used resulted in some surprising insights into where one is spiritually in the now and in the past and where God appears to have been at work
~ the work provided clues for future action or contemplation
~ it was good to be with 'my kind of people'.
I would have my stay more enjoyable if .... the water didn't have such a strange taste! |
| |
~ the accommodation provided was of a high standard
~ the service at table and everywhere friendly and welcoming
~ the lack of pressure wonderful
~ the countryside enchanting
~ the quality of the group leading (Dorothy Nicholson and Gordon Jeff) excellent.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ....
Not a gripe really - just a comment!
~ a kettle in my room would have been good (4) Pound House
~ Fat Pigeon lovely, but half an hour opening too "restrained" in the words of Hillary.
However, thank you so much - I feel rested and more able to face life. |
| |
... have had a wonderful time. I live locally and knew Sheldon existed - but not much more. I have been ill and wanted something to do and to recuperate. The Journalling course was excellent, but what's been best for me is staying in the Pig Pen - having space - to be me, having contact if wanted. I tried to book to stay on - an example of how lovely. I really benefited from the massage and jacuzzi, the library and the healthy food that encouraged and tempted me to eat.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ....
I found the brochure a bit confusing - it says Reading Week 1:1 time might be possible if booked, but was told it's only for ministry - the brochure needs to be clear. [Webeditor: fair point. sorry.] Having said that I will be re-booking another course - MBTI and time out - once I have worked out the programme!
Would be nice if the Pound House had kettles in rooms and all showers had detachable heads. But, I have had a really lovely time.. See you soon. |
| |
... meals were excellent and relaxed - volunteers and staff friendly and extremely helpful - rooms were welcoming - should have like a wider duvet! but that's a minor detail. Just wish I had longer to explore and enjoy surrounding country and grounds. The course was excellent and timing of everything good. Thank you.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ....
wider duvet! but expect if I were smaller it would be ok! |

... we were able together to learn a new, non-cerebral skill which will enrich our lives. We were able to join in the simple but meaningful worship. We met fascinating people and enjoyed the communal meal times, and the tasty and healthy food, We enjoyed the non-fussy ease and support of the community and helpers, and Philippa, the course tutor.
I would have found my stay more enjoyable if.....
~
my leg had not been injured [not on the course] and so was not able to walk in the lovely grounds.
~ we had had more time to browse in the library.
~ there were no obvious drawbacks. The environment provided is excellent in all spheres - especially the civilised pre-dinner drink. Thank you. |
| |
... the course was all I had anticipated and achieved a "team spirit" that I would not have thought possible in two days. However, the venue ie. "Sheldon" has made a major impact - a community that is hardly seen but always there just when you need them - a whole series of options of how to spend your day and evening - you can mix and match, be social or very quiet, be prayerful or just enjoy the wonderful surroundings - it is very special.
I would have my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ...
I want to be objective and provide useful feedback - but I have found nothing to fault our memorable stay. |
| |
... every perceived need had already been thought of and provided. The community, teams and volunteers were so cheerful at all times, and everything 'worked' and every action was filled with kindness and care. Even in the open spaces of countryside the care and thought was felt. Thank you for the extras - it took us an 'extra mile' to get here, but the community went further.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if .... sparkling water in the bar would be nice. |
| |
... newly built Pig Pens were delightful. Attention to detail (as usual at Sheldon!) was evident. Very comfortable. As usual my dietary needs were supplied without fuss and unobtrusively. Many thanks. My first experience of the bar was good, especially with the quiet lounge next door, in order to drink in peace.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ... the clock didn't tick!! My inability to sleep soundly with any noise, particularly the ticking of a clock meant I would not have liked to stay longer in a Pig Pen. I also find a ticking clock mars my concentration. |

~ the meals were delicious, as always
~ the very quiet room (Pig Pen) was just what I needed to recover after a stressful few weeks - thank you.

... the setting is beautiful and peaceful. The buildings also, and they add to the total experience. The cleanliness was impeccable, but it did not detract from the homely feel. All the staff/volunteers were lovely courteous and a joy to be with. The view from our bedroom was just splendid. Thank you all.
We would have found our stay more enjoyable if ... the mattress was too hard for me, and my wife agreed - so our sleep was not as good as it may have been. |
| |
~ of the air of calm and tranquility as soon as we came through the gate!
~ the attention to detail (names on our bedroom door) which was welcoming.
~ spotless cleanliness.
~ friendly and low key help from volunteers.
~ goodies in the shop!
~ scenery and sunshine.
Many thanks. |

~ as a single person, I was given a single room.
~ the respect for people's space and quiet was wonderful and renewing.
~ it's a beautiful setting and very well run.
~ we created a safe and sacred space as a group on the course - the centre helped make this possible.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ....
it was a shame that when the bar closed we had to relocate - but I understand this is due to licensing laws.
It would have been nice to sing psalms or a song in the services - I understand that it should be quiet, but a bit of singing would be good.
It was financially not easy to come - but I'm really glad I did! |
| |
... very peaceful - beautiful walks.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ...
I did not enjoy my room - it felt rather like a cell : with a very high window. Such beautiful scenery and I could not enjoy it from my bedroom. I would not have been able to stay in it for any longer than the two nights. [Webeditor: see our future plans for improvements to the Long Barn.] |

... facilities welcoming, spacious.
Karen was excellent in both input and response to questions. Group of 12 was helpful; not overwhelming. Meals were appetizing, varied and plentiful.
Lovely to share in community prayers and conversations at meals especially.
I would have found my stay more useful/enjoyable/helpful if ....
My sight is deteriorating, and whilst I value the many ramps and indication of steps, the following areas might be improved:
~ little steps to tables and benches outside Long Barn
~ pathway down to the new chapel from outside the Pig Pens - as the space between steps is quite a lot, a defined contrasting edge would be good.
~ Inside the Long Barn, going up to bedrooms, the first to steps from the meeting room and the second step almost at the top would be more helpful if edged with a contrasting colour. Hand rails are excellent.[Webeditor: see our future plans for the Long Barn.] |

The course was hard work, but I felt safe and secure, and able to give the group all my attention. I will certainly recommend Sheldon where appropriate, and hope to return. |

... It clarified misunderstandings/gaps from a course I did in New Zealand about 15 years ago. The sensitive interaction of the participants was particularly good. Accommodation and meals were good.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if.... there were more wash/toilet facilities - these were ok though if I was on retreat I would need more privacy/space. [Webeditor: see our future plans for improvements to the Long Barn.] The steps (outside) leading from near the Pig Pens to the new chapel downstairs entrance were difficult to see - they probably need a contrast colour along each tread edge. Because the concrete is fairly white/light the edging would be most visible if black or striped with yellow. [Webeditor: thanks for this - we'll see what can be done] |

... of the traditional welcome, care and friendly atmosphere and excellent catering in buildings which get better every time I come.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if.... there were washbasins in all bedrooms.[Webeditor: see future plans.] |

| ... Accommodation, food, community, staff, volunteers. Countryside, spring. Time to think of myself in relation to .../church/others. Karen is a pleasant lady and led well. She is, however, inclined to impart a lot of information rather quickly which made my head spin. She was more focused when we got to actual personality types. Starts on time, but her enthusiasm led to over-run on every session. |
| |
| ... We always relax immediately on arriving at Sheldon. It's the location, the welcome, the decor, the - everything! Thank you for your care and returning us home refreshed! |
| |
... good food, good company, beautiful countryside especially Canonteign Falls. Thank you.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if.... there had been a washbasin in my room. [Webeditor: see our plans for the Long Barn.] The Enneagram had resonated more and been more convincing from a theoretical and logical viewpoint. I would have appreciated a theoretical overview before exploring the nine points. There were too many anecdotes. |

... Pig Pen (Gloucester) - kitchen is superbly appointed. Room 3 really well furnished. Staff/meals/setting are superb. The bird feeder in front of the window is a super touch! I felt refreshed after the first night here.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if .... Gloucester Pig Pen has the following minor teething problems - 1) limited hanging space for two people (4 hooks!); 2) hot tap "noise"; 3) limited shelf space in bathroom - somewhere to put two soap bags close to the sink! [Webeditor - all in hand!] |
| |
... After 2 days decorating, the jacuzzi when we arrived was wonderful. It was a pleasant surprise to find ourselves in one of the new "Pig Pens" - very spacious and comfortable with a glorious view. Sitting outside, several people remarked that we looked as if we were at our private villa in the Costa del Sol! Lovely food and wonderfully friendly and gracious staff helped us to relax completely, which we really needed.
We would have found our stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if... there was more hanging space for clothes! |

~ The beauty and peace of the physical location.
~ The tasteful and "peace-creating" decor of the house - the lounges, bar and chapels.
~ The warmth of welcome, and the consistent, but unobtrusive support and service given by all the staff.
~ The ability to make my own cup of tea in the morning and coffee/tea at other times. And the oranges!
~ The very appetising, very enjoyable meals.
~ The atmosphere of prayer .... the presence - almost tangible at times ... of God.
Thank you to each and every one, you, this place and your work will be remembered in prayer - for definite! |

I was comfortable and relaxed in my room and the input of the course leaders, their non-confrontational approach and helpful attitude made a complex subject fun. And the food was just perfect. I'm told that a superb chocolate cake is sometimes on offer - the jam sponge was good, but perhaps the choccy will arrive tomorrow! |
| |
... Once again the accommodation and food was excellent. Flowers in room a lovely welcoming touch. MBTI course was heavy, but has given much food for thought. Would recommend it! Thank you to everyone who made the stay so enjoyable and refreshing!
I would have found my stay more helpful if ... there had been handouts of the long talks - too much to listen and take notes. |
| |
| ... It is a beautiful restful place where we are well looked after. The home cooking and attention to detail is impressive. The course gave me a real insight into myself and other people. I feel more at ease with myself and tolerant to others. There is a real sense of care here. |
| |
... Although I came previously for the MBTI days, there have been many blessings in the days I have been here. As expected the food and loving service have been good. The special service as one of the people who stayed for the whole week has been especially appreciated. I have been able to relax when I didn't really think I needed to - space, time, quiet, so many things have made this stay special. The setting in God's wonderful creation has been enhanced (if that is possible!) by everything Sheldon. Thank you so much.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if.... nothing to say here - I doubt it could have been made any better! |
| |
1) Excellent course which really challenged and developed my thinking about my personality type and my ministry and helped me in considering other people's different way of approaching life and work.
2) Felt so wonderfully nurtured and cared for by centre staff - didn't have to worry about any of the practicalities of life!
3) Lovely room (with en suite!!) and lovely setting.
4) Everything in the centre seems designed to please and to help you relax and be at ease.
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if....
1) A little more free time to enjoy the countryside and Jacuzzi and massage facilities/options.
2) No mobile phone signal (?!) - but probably no bad thing really (but would be good to have that on publicity so I could have warned people in advance that they wouldn't be able to reach me). |
| |
| ... The peace and quiet gave us both time for reflection, reading and rest - and the half hour in the Fat Pigeon each evening meant we didn't feel totally isolated. The workshop itself was disappointing. Gordon and Dorothy were lovely people and there was nothing amiss with the content of the sessions, but the presentation was poor. There was no attempt to engage with different learning styles - and little opportunity for exploring the material experimentally. No hand-outs or powerpoint presentations - even the flipchart neglected. Difficult to take in so much material when it is simply 'read off a script' without pause for comment, question or exploration. |
| |
| ... I am writing to thank you very much for your hospitality whilst I was attending the Myers Briggs course last week. The course itself was excellent and worthwhile because it helped me to affirm myself as God has created me and deepened my understanding and appreciation of other people. However, the time was made particularly special because of your warm, kind and thoughtful hospitality. There is a real sense of calm, peace and restoration in your community which I am sure is therapeutic for many people. I realise that this is not automatic, there is always a cost and I am grateful for your commitment and hard work. |
| |
| ... It was like going home. A warm welcome awaited me. It was comfortable physically and socially and very relaxing! Slept like a log both nights. It was a super setting for our MBTI workshop as everyone was so much at ease. Thank you. |

Hope to be back to see the next phase completed... I can't even ask for better weather. Thank you for allowing me to 'waste time' here rather than at the station. |

... The workshop was what I needed at this point, and helped me better understand myself; Karen's leadership of it was inspiring.
The weather was excellent - and there was time for walking and exploring the new fields.
The silence of the countryside was a refreshing change from the buzz of the city where I live.
The food was up to its usual standard. |

~ of the gentle, non-intrusive hospitality with delicious food!
~ the excellent tuition given by Karen Webb;
~ the "safety" felt here enabling us to be open and honest with each other.
P.S. I'm so glad I had booked to spend the extra day at Sheldon. I found I needed 'space' and silence to be able to settle my thoughts after the depth of the Enneagram. How wonderful to have Bishop Richard Hawkins' words of wisdom. Thank you. |
| |
~ The welcome was warm
~ Guidance appropriate and minimal while absolutely adequate
~ The food was great
~ The course was wonderful. Karen was excellent as a facilitator and guide. |
I would have found my stay more useful/helpful/enjoyable if ....
~ I was very happy in LB1, but find the walk to the loo (downstairs at night so not to wake folk) and shower (downstairs because the other is busy) a bit of a pain.
~ More showers and loos would be great [Webeditor: see our future plans for the Long Barn] .
Above all, thank you for your warm hospitality and friendship. |
| |
~ It was timed during the week - much more suitable for clergy - there are lots of resources elsewhere at weekends, which one can rarely manage.
~ Hospitality, facilities, food etc etc all of your usual high quality and offered so graciously - lovingly and without fuss and so practical.
~ The course itself was excellent and offered an opportunity to meet delightful people and renew contacts from a previous course. ....Thank you so much for a great 3 days. |

| ... Thank you all so much for the holding ministry you provide. Again, I appreciated the careful unobtrusiveness and quiet efficiency that are hallmarks of Sheldon; they have a healing quality. Mary and Martha has become a permanent place of stability for anyone in ministry who needs to be here. I am always humbled by the commitment and example of the community whenever I come. |

... The course was excellent, content challenging, presentation relaxed, encouraging and inclusive of all members of the group. The 'informal' question and discussion sessions enabled one to expand on the days "work" and discuss in depth in a non-judgemental and accepting atmosphere. ... I was cosseted with the warm, caring team of Sheldon staff and volunteers checking on my needs, suitability of our meals, as I am allergic to wheat, special dishes being individually made for me. When tired checking that I was coming to lunch or bringing lunch to my chalet etc etc. Sharing good cooking with beautiful Christian friends, as well as the peace and comfort, I'd felt quite desperate to need, when I telephoned last week.
I would in the future enjoy my stay more if my scooter could access a larger area. It seems this will be rectified with the Pig Pens new development [Webed: yes!]. Also if the gravel got rolled and possible access further afield. I'm not sure if this is ongoing or a future possibility?!

| |
... of the quality of the workshop leader Philippa, the company - congenial and atmosphere relaxing. The food was good too and the chapel a helpful place to worship in.
We would have found my stay more enjoyable if ... the bed/mattress was less hard, our first night's sleep was poor as a result. The intrusion of the security light - all night, again made sleeping difficult. The second night we managed to put up a blanket at the window. It was sad we were not allowed to celebrate the Eucharist during our stay! [Webed: our House Rules mean that guests are not invited to celebrate. We generally have a Eucharist here once a fortnight but obviously short stay visitors might miss this.] |

... I wanted to visit Sheldon for a very long time, especially since the 'green' book [A&A] has been in circulation. I have used the book extensively in thinking about 'team' in parish context, and then preparing for retiring from full-time ministry. Our session with Philippa was excellent; sensitive, and enabling us to express intimacy more freely.
We found it difficult/impossible/unrealistic to avoid talking 'church' throughout the time... we know why you have that rule! [Webed: some find it harder than others - we make no apologies for the rule as it matters to very many people.]
Thank you. |

... I wanted to do an introduction to the Enneagram properly and this was a good time as part of a post Easter break - Exeter is quite a long way from Leicester and I could visit other friends. Though the group was large, I realised the numbers are necessary to get a wider variety of types and that it takes time to work through each type.
The food was excellent and I coped with the small room and limited bathroom facilities by getting up late (and going to bed after others!) [Webeditor: see our future plans for the Long Barn.] I enjoyed the jacuzzi and walking in the area, and watching the video on Wednesday night.
My stay might have been more helpful/productive if .... Information about walks in the area were given at the start - I guessed after I went out the first afternoon that you must have a range of guided walks - as indeed you do. |
| |
... It was a really good introduction to the Enneagram. The food was great as was the hospitality. The bar is a brilliant idea - and so well stocked! The struggles I had with the course were of my own making. I was just caught off balance by my reaction to recognising any "type". I hadn't really taken on that I could "be" any other way but after listening a bit harder, I felt less hopeless. I was also reassured by Karen's anecdotes of similar folk.
I loved the flowers in my room. I enjoyed the eucharist in the chapel.
I did get uncomfortable sitting relatively still for such a long time. I don't know what you can do about that. Perhaps I should have booked a massage. |
| |
... The course was very well organised, lots of attention to detail and care taken to "look after us all" in the workshops. The "domestic arrangements" were good and the food excellent - obviously all prepared and served with love - made one feel very "cared for". Thank you! It is good to have Sheldon staff around and looking after us so gently. Enjoyed the walks and the whole ethos of Sheldon. Look forward to returning.
My stay might have been more helpful/enjoyable if .... there was more bathroom/toilet provision (I was in the Long Barn) - but this didn't spoil my stay but I had to watch out for space in bathroom/shower in the mornings. [Webeditor: see our plans for the Long Barn.] But still a big thank you to all the staff and to Karen - she was an excellent facilitator and teacher. |
| |
... Good company, food, leader, environment, course material.
My stay might have been more helpful/enjoyable if .... the plumbing had been less noisy and a list of participants (Christian names) at the beginning would have been helpful. |
| |
| ... Karen's style was very good. Giving the theory but also dressing up the content with examples. The breaks between the sessions were adequate, time to walk and relax. The other participants on the course all helped make the 3 days enjoyable - all willing to share in so many ways
... I would like to save up to come on Pt 2 Enneagram in November '05... |

... Environment - my first visit to Sheldon and I was most impressed with the setting, the peace and quiet. I felt welcomed, well looked after and well fed.
Accommodation - comfortable, although the shared facilities were a bit cramped.
Course - a very steep learning curve for me amongst a group of super people who gelled together well. I learnt a lot which will continue to be digested and understood over the weeks and months. I need to spend much longer with the Enneagram to really grasp how to apply it in day to day encounters and in the more specific area of spiritual direction.
My stay might have been more helpful/enjoyable/productive if ......
Environment - I would not change anything - keep the sun shining!!
Accommodation - showers rather than baths much preferred.
Course - For me it was like learning a new language fluently in 3 days flat. Consequently, my brain got rapidly saturated to the extent that, by Day 2, Day 1 was at best a blur and at worst, forgotten. It would have been useful to have been given a short introduction to the Enneagram to read before the course, or some suggested reading, so that one had some idea of the thought processes behind it. The oral teaching method was fine, but I suspect that my attempt to take notes as Karen spoke was a mistake as I could not relate quickly enough what she was saying to the hand-outs. Some guidance on the best way of learning the Enneagram might have been useful. |
| |
1. The community were so warm and welcoming - including the volunteers.
2. The accommodation in the Pound House is so comfortable and well-appointed.
3. The food is delicious!
4. The chapel prayers provided a super start to the day.
5. The setting is so beautiful - a perfect time of year to visit Devon. I couldn't believe the numbers of primroses!
6. The workshop was informative and helpful, giving much insight into Enneagram personality types. |
| My stay might have been more helpful/enjoyable/productive if ... I realised too late that I would have benefited much more if I had taken fuller notes from the beginning of what Karen was saying. There was so much material that one couldn't retain it all in the memory.... |
| |
... You looked after me so well - the comfortable room, the food, the friendliness and beautiful ambience.
The course more than came up to expectations. It was illuminating and clearly put across by Karen. I feel that I am able to move on. Hopefully I will be able to keep the insights open with the helpful course notes and further reading. And yes, I think I will come on a Part 2 course in the autumn. Thank you |
| |
| ... The directions about getting here were very clear - the welcome warm - the room comfortable (C2B) and thoughtfully provisioned with flowers, extra blankets, handily convenient loo, tea, coffee, mugs, table, views over spectacular scenery etc. I loved the Enneagram workshop which was excellently paced - space to rest, walk, reflect, go to the seaside etc. Nice people on course and kindly volunteers. I love the chapel - so simple and beautiful and prayerful. This is a place I would come back to and which I would recommend to friends. Food is excellent and choices bountiful. Thank you and bless you all for being a lovely team in a lovely place. |

| ... I am so grateful to Sarah for her patience/understanding/help when I was offered a cancellation, and I am so glad I came. Excellent food. I liked the flowers in my room and the superb view. I could not believe it when I was shown to my room - Chalet 2A - as I'm sure it's where I was when I was here March '94 12,000-mile service - so immediately I felt more at home/secure. Thank you for that happen chance! I also felt very comfortable and happy with my "bathroom companion", so many thanks. I also enjoyed two shortish walks in the beautiful local scenery Monday and Tuesday and I've booked a jacuzzi for today. Karen has been excellent..... |

| ... As always I felt cared for, I never felt harrassed. The atmosphere was relaxed. The course (Myers Briggs) I found challenging and in some parts hard going, but over all it was helpful. It was good to be in Stephen's Lodge again, especially as I am more handicapped than I was when last here two years ago. Being able to have breakfast together by ourselves helped to give us an unhurried start to the day. The Quiet Day addresses were good - not too long, but giving food for thought and prayer. |

... Warm welcome from the community - clean and comfortable rooms and bed. Good food. Good and comfortable meeting room. Lovely surroundings. The MBTI course was well run and taught - valuable for personal development and in help in relating to other people.
The only criticism I have is the lack of a wash hand basin in the bedroom. [Webeditor: see our future plans.]

... Being in Stephen's Lodge was great - a home from home. The unintrusive loving care of the community throughout the week was very affirming and relaxing. Thank you so much.
Lovely to see the Courtyard Development completed and to enjoy the new facilities.
The Myers Briggs course was interesting and helpful.
The Quiet Day with Hilary Ison also good. She spoke in a down-to-earth, understandable way with a helpful use of icons and symbols.
Myers Briggs - I would have appreciated more input on how a developing spirituality affects the different personality types. |
| |
... The kindness and hospitality of community and volunteers - the calm, unrushed order - beautiful surroundings. I particularly enjoyed the MBTI group and Jeff and Dorothy's leadership. Would be interested in exploring more about how type develops in childhood and how Christian discipleship and Christ's redeeming work in our lives affects the ongoing development of type.
Thank you Jan for lovely vegetarian meals.
Communion was a lovely surprise.
My stay might have been more helpful if ..... there was a glass or plastic mug in the Pound House bedrooms. I spent some quiet time in the new chapel - if many do, then a cushion or kneeler/stool might be helpful.

... Accommodation - I was very well looked after and catered for. Thank you for all the care and detail. What a wonderful place.
Workshop - I enjoyed the workshop, and found it stimulated a lot of thought. Thanks to Gordon and Dorothy, and all the participants.
The second day of the workshop felt much more tiring than the first! I think it would have been helpful to have had some little tasks (or more buzz groups) in amongst in the morning session, because it was a long stretch of didactic teaching. |
| |
| ... I have always wanted to explore MBTI and I now have a better understanding of who I am and why I react in the ways I do! The room was comfortable. The community welcoming and helpful. The food was excellent. Thank you. |
| |
... Good course, well presented by helpful thoughtful leaders. Enjoyed the place - beautiful buildings and friendly, caring staff. Would recommend it to others unreservedly.
My stay might have been more enjoyable had the beds not been as hard - preventing sleep for those of us of a more tender physique - I even considered having to leave and find a B&B with a softer bed!! Is it possible to buy and have available a mattress pad for use if any guests who, like me, need more padding! Also a small point, but mirrors in bathrooms are very small for ladies and the use of a glass shelf above the sink would help - also a glass for bathroom use. Food - very carbohydrate based - especially breakfast. Could we have boiled eggs or cold ham and tomatoes available? Sweetener as well as sugar. Rather too much carbs for diet controlled diabetics or pre-diabetics. [WebEd: diets always catered for when we are given advance notice.] |
| |
... The course was interesting and informative. The room was warm and comfortable.
My stay might have been more enjoyable if ... the shop sold diet drinks not just full sugar cola and a few food items not covered in chocolate. At break times there was only biscuits or cake to choose from - not helpful for a diabetic? Perhaps a fruit bowl would be helpful. [WebEd: fruit normally provided - not sure what happened this time!] |

... The whole place and atmosphere is restorative. I appreciate the attention to detail (eg., fresh flowers in my room; sufficient hooks in the en-suite; the presentation of the delicious food; colour as well as variety/balance). The comfort in the Pound House is excellent, and I was glad not to have to sit on a plastic chair for the workshops. Staff and volunteers are friendly and caring without being OTT.
As for the workshops, I enjoyed these and was very pleased to have this opportunity of doing MBTI with Dorothy and Gordon who are so knowledgeable and experienced. The Basic was for the second time, but I was glad to re-visit this and learn more. Thank you all for being here.
My stay might have been more enjoyable if ... I could have stayed longer!! Seriously, I cannot think of anything that could have been improved on as regards all aspects of your hospitality (apart from, ideally, darker bedroom curtains). Re the workshops, it would have been good to have had more on MBTI and Prayer/Spirituality or MBTI and developing 3rd and 4th functions as part of the Christian journey. I realise, though, that this would require at least another half-day. |

...I had done massage before, and as I do it so rarely now and have got into some bad habits, it was very helpful to have them corrected - also to learn a lot of new moves.
Have visited (only stayed once before) Sheldon several times and never fail to feel refreshed spiritually and emotionally by the good food, lovely company (perhaps I should have put that first!) and beautiful walking area. |
| |
...I had to relax
Scenery aided relaxation
Really scrumptious, inventive food
Time to talk to mum
Walks nearby
Plenty of breaks with tea and chocolate cake!
Warm, clean rooms
A bath that fills with hot water in 3 minutes. |
| |
...The gentle, but firm, way the community acts.
The air of peace which pervades everything (possibly covering mad panics elsewhere!)
The sloe gin!
The excellent leader of the massage workshop.
Thank you all so much for all you do for us ministers and our families.
We both had a wonderful time. |
| |
...It was focused yet had time and space to relax.
A relaxed atmosphere, but confidence in those caring for us and the prayer surrounding everything. I didn't have to share more about myself than I needed to. Lovely accommodation; extra benefit of jacuzzi and excellent healthy food. As before, I look forward to another visit.
It was good for my husband to experience the massage so that he understands more the effect of what he does. The retreat for him was good and the flexibility of my being able to come after a hospital appointment was very helpful. Many thanks to you all. |

....The accommodation was really nice
The surroundings are beautiful
Everyone was extremely helpful
The massage course was excellent, I learnt a lot and hope to put it into practice. |
| |
| ...The staff and volunteers worked well together making guests feel relaxed and welcomed. The surroundings are great. Wonderful scenery and gardens with the accommodation well equipped, clean and comfortable. The course of massage was excellent. I will be using the skills I have learnt to good use. Very enjoyable. Thank you so much for a lovely break. |
| |
| The 'Massage course for Beginners' proved to be just the introduction to massage that I was hoping for - very clear, calm and encouraging instruction in a relaxing and comfortable setting. Our hosts were most welcoming and the food and accommodation was very much appreciated. I felt privileged to be part of the 2 days. No negative comments to make. It would be very good to have a "follow-up" 2 days. |
| |
The massage course was wonderful beyond my expectations. Christine is such a good teacher; kind, knowledgeable, but firm as well, and it was lovely having Jan with us. I wasn't sure if I would learn enough to be useful to others, but I feel reasonably confident that, with practice, I can use my new skills.
As ever, being at Sheldon is a holiday. Food wonderful and company excellent. The people on the course really jelled and it was a privilege to be here.
I knew beforehand we would be working on the floor. I expected to find it difficult (kneeling), although I managed better than I thought I would. My partner really struggled, though, especially the second afternoon. |

- Hospitality: warm reception, lots of good food, relaxed atmosphere, comfortable room and facilities, wonderful views and setting
- People: staff ever so friendly, willing to listen and tried to be helpful with all requests (eg. jacuzzi/wine!)
- Volunteers provide a great service, really valued being cared for - made the whole two days, not just workshops, a restful experience
- Resources: maps for walks superb especially little comments en route! Jacuzzi fantastically run and set up.
Whole 'kaboodle' encouraged us to enjoy each other's company as a couple. A great boon for how we manage time back at home.

... of the warm welcome; approachability/flexibility/friendliness of the staff - nothing too much trouble
Opportunity for quiet/solitude or sociability and chat, as and when.
Warm, comfortable and attractive bedroom and living space.
Beautifully designed buildings - really pleasing/calming to the eye - especially the beams in the chapel forming a cross over the communion table, and the window behind with a view of the beautiful landscape.
The relaxed, unhurried atmosphere.
The ethos of servant hood which permeates all that happens there.
The excellent massage course - professionally and sensitively led.
Laughter alongside reflection.
Wonderful food - delicious, imaginative and lovingly presented - the fact that much of it is home produced adds to the enjoyment.
The jacuzzi! Thank you so much - what a luxury!
....it was a wonderfully refreshing capsule of time, which will resource me for the activity leading up to Christmas. I plan to write an article about it for our clergy spouses' newsletter and I do hope people will want to come and experience Sheldon for themselves. It's taken me about 15 years to manage it, mainly because of distance, but I hope that this visit was the first of many. |

| Thank you for your recent e-mail about availability at Sheldon. I went on the Highways, byways and cul-de sacs retreat in 2004 and found it extremely helpful. I would recommend it to anyone especially those with a few years under their belt. |
| |
....in the first place Gordon Jeff and Dorothy Nicholson, course tutors, had themselves "mapped out" the several sessions so well and presented the challenging questions so charmingly to the group of 9, that I think we were all of us (in our own ways) put at ease from the very beginning.
- in considering and being willing (and even desirous) of sharing our own past, present and future thoughts about our own journeys and equally ready to listen to one another and learn from each other, as well as from Gordon and Dorothy - and thus encouraged to continue on life's journeying in a positive and forward looking manner to the end of our days (and beyond!).
....the usual friendly welcome and unfussy and loving way of Christian service at all times by the community staff members and the volunteer workers, in the provision of all we could possibly expect in the menus and preparation of the meals, and the clearing away (etc) and also "the room service", including the flowers in the rooms and our names on the doors; and all else that goes on "behind the scenes" for our comfort. Thank you. |
| |
| ...your quiet unintrusive atmosphere of TLC pervades the whole place... and everyone smiles! The course was beautifully structured and led by Dorothy and Gordon. They were sensitive to the responses of the group and flexible accordingly, which made for a most happy rapport. (Any "guinea pig" squeaks would have been a pleasure!) P.S. the cuisine is cordon bleu. |
| |
| ...I came not knowing what to expect, but hoping to be able to express my grief, turn the page and see the way forward, and to my surprise and delight, I have been able to do all of those things. The Highways, Byways and Cul de Sacs could have been designed with me in mind and I thank God, from the depths of my being, that I was guided and able to come on this wonderful course. Sarah was the person who suggested the course and it was perfect. Both Gordon and Dorothy led us through a busy two days, so that we really had to concentrate on what we were doing - there was no time for outside distractions, thank goodness! The insight into the lives and problems of the others in the group was very comforting and their support of me quite energising. The listening ear of all the "helpers" was another source of joy. Thank you all. |

...the food was good
the people were warm and friendly as ever
the sense of space and peace
the content of the workshop was good |

A Godly and no pressure environment with great people and food.
The spiritual and intellectual stimulation provided by the Enneagram.
Space and discovering it OK to be an 8! |
| |
. there was a warm welcome and good atmosphere
... great food and comfortable accommodation
. really good programme : I personally gained a lot from the Enneagram workshop
. an all round memorable stay. Thank you. Everything was great - thanks for making me so welcome. It has been a wonderful experience. |
| |
. the little touches in the bedroom are always a delight
.. . the refurbished buildings are a sensual joy
. the food is excellent
. the community worship is accessible
. the Teign Valley and Sheldon grounds are attractive
. there is a cared-for but not (s)mothered feel from the 'staff' |

.. the hospitality was so very welcoming and caring and also because the Enneagram Course with Karen was just so uplifting. I was looking forward to attending but it far surpassed my wildest expectations. Thank you. The Sheldon Centre is just something out of this world. How fortunate I feel to be able to sometimes share in both sides. |
| |
It is not possible for me to express in words my "thank you" for having me for these past few days. I had not expected the Enneagram to be an healing experience; I realised I could at last stop hiding, be myself and found acceptance. It was such an enormously good place to be and to be with you; and such generosity in every way. It was simply perfect - just being together with you, the best part. |
| |
... Everyone was friendly and considerate. It was especially nice that Jan went out of her way to do something special for me and for others. My room was cosy and comfortable. The Enneagram programme was excellent and we all engage well with each other and with Karen. The fresh fruit and veg and indeed all the food was excellent. Thank you all very much for your kindness and support. I'll be back! |

Excellent course in good company - good leadership. All unthreatening, so enjoyable - though it is quite intensive. Course taking place in Long Barn is very good. Sheldon was very welcoming in its usual easy unintrusive way. The new accommodation is lovely, beautifully thought out and designed. Lovely hot water. Duvets not too hot. Meals were very good indeed - lots of choice of people to talk to on long tables ie. easy to get to know people and move around. Lovely light room, lovely view. Sitting rooms, Fat Pigeon, so comfortable. Thank you so much for all your care, work and welcome. |
| |
. The sessions were well structured and the emphasis was always positive. I found the meditation in the 6th session, which combined our movement with minimalist type music more of a distraction than a help, but this is purely personal and shows the built-in restrictions of my classical music background. It has been a luxury to stay in the Pound House again. The services in chapel and the variety of the meals menu have all contributed to a happy stay. |
| |
Sheldon as a community feels like home. Sheldon as a place feels wonderful. I felt gently supported yet deeply challenged by Karen's workshop. Her work in the narrative tradition provides far, far more spiritual riches than simply reading a self-help manual. |
| |
I've waited a long time for Enneagram II and it has exceeded my expectations. Not only is Karen very good, but everyone has been extraordinarily open and relaxed and I love them all. It has given me hope in a bad place, and perhaps signs of the way through. |
| |
First of all Sheldon expresses the deep peace of God's loving presence. Both in the hospitality and overall care in everything that is done. Regarding the actual Enneagram II, it took a little longer to 'get into', but proved to be excellent both in the leadership and enabling of the group in its open and honest sharing. All the food served and offered was of the highest quality and we were truly spoiled to be given cake (and homemade!) with our afternoon tea! My grateful thanks. |
| |
...... of the beautiful setting
of the lovely clean, comfortable room
of the warm, space giving, non-intrusive welcome of the community and helpers
of the beautiful food, which I didn't have to prepare.
As regards the course itself, for me it offered fewer insights than the last Part I course, but the ones it did offer seem to have been more significant. So the overall benefit is at least as great. Karen's leadership, combining warmth, attentiveness and wisdom, was again exemplary and we seemed to get on well as a group (even if we 9s were preponderant). |
| |
.there was time to try out ideas, to gain confidence to ask or risk saying. Almost everyone was so willing to be open and share struggles as well as discoveries. It made it all much clearer and connected up with the first session. I came to the first session knowing nothing about Enneagram, except I'd heard people say it was good, more valuable than Myers Briggs and it would have been helpful to have a book or two recommended or simple notes to read before coming, as I might then not have been so confused with all the words etc., and got more out of the first session to use at the second. |
| |
The atmosphere is welcoming, supportive and relaxing. Although not as transformative as Enneagram I this has moved me further on and also helped me to understand others (including my wife!!) far more. Thank you to all involved. |
| |
..there was the usual welcoming friendly atmosphere. The new facilities in the Pound House are wonderful. Karen led Enneagram II as lovingly and as sensitively as she did Part I. Halfway through, I was wondering how helpful I was finding the process. But, having been away for a few days since then, I have had time to digest and work through some of the insights and teaching, and am finding this more and more helpful. I have undoubtedly gained in self-knowledge, and hopefully will continue to do so as the process continues. |
