Garden Volunteer - recruiting

Sheldon has dozens of small herbaceous borders and shrubberies, tubs and hanging baskets, acres of fields, tracks, hedges and woodland, an outdoor labyrinth, open air theatre and a flourishing vegetable garden. The care and maintenance of these spaces are a precious part of providing "good space" for guests to enjoy around the Sheldon site. Work is currently carried out by Community members, estate and garden staff, and workparty volunteers. We are interested in recruiting up to 3 volunteers to work together or separately during the growing season. We are expecting practical domestic gardener level of knowledge, not expert horticultural.

Here is the role and person specification:

  • Minimum commitment of a half day per week (could be a whole day per fortnight)
  • Sufficiently knowledgeable about plants to be able to work unsupervised within a basic framework of instruction (weeding, sowing, transplanting, tending, watering)
  • Sufficiently fit and active to be able to work at ground level, use and carry hand tools, watering cans, etc
  • Courteous and quiet when working around the site (most of our guests value quiet and privacy over chattiness)
  • Two character references required
