Recruiting for : Practical outdoor all-rounder

About the post

Sheldon is growing and the Community is looking to recruit a skilled, practical all-rounder to work 1 - 2 days/week. The role involves taking responsibility for some areas of routine maintenance and at other times working alongside fellow members of the Estate Team. The well-kept building and grounds are a vital part of the safe and caring environment we offer our guests.  

The post holder will be line managed by Carl Lee. We anticipate that after induction and training the role will divide into the following categories:

  1. General care of the grounds including open air theatre
    • working alone or with other colleagues doing grass mowing, strimming, hedge cutting and larger gardening tasks 
  2. Having areas of specific responsibility pro-actively planning your own work within an agreed standards framework and understanding the constraints of guest occupancy. This would include items such as
    • seasonal work like leaf clearing, care of gutters
    • care of hard paths using brush, blower, pressure washer as appropriate
    • ongoing redecoration of external woodwork
    • care of gates around the gardens and 45 acre estate including easing, adjusting, replacing catches and hinges
    • running repairs to trellis, post-and-rail and pig netting fencing around the gardens and estate
    • maintenance of white lines on steps, handrails and other safety features
    • care of wooden garden furniture (tables, benches, picnic benches)
  3. Attending to other minor repairs, external decorations etc as notfied by others on a running list basis.

The successful applicant is likely to have most or all of these skills and aptitudes

  • Mature experience across a range of DIY-type practical skills, including use and care of hand tools
  • Takes a pride in working productively and to a high standard 
  • Working mechanical knowledge to operate self-propelled mower, mini tractor, strimmer and ride-on mower 
  • A willingness to work outdoors in all seasons and most weathers
  • Self-motivated and able to enjoy working alone for much of the time
  • Able to plan and organise work within the framework of given priorities and report back accurately to line manager
  • Capacity to collaborate with and work co-operatively alongside other team members 
  • Basic computer skills useful but not essential (email correspondence, list making, record keeping)
  • Maintaining a professional approach to safe working practices and maintaining a safe environment for guests
  • A friendly manner with a clear respect for interpersonal boundaries and understanding of confidentiality and discretion

Job details

  • The working day starts at 8.30am
  • One of the 2 days should routinely be a Friday
  • The second day can vary by mutual arrangement but should include some Saturdays for initial training period
  • Rate of pay negotiable
  • One month probationary period with a view to a permanent post
