The Eye of the Beholder

Led by Kevin Scott

Art can be uplifting and delightful; it can also be infuriating. It can be mysterious and aloof, but it can also speak to our soul.

It has been said that art and creativity are signs of the Divine Spark within humanity. For thousands of years, human beings have painted pictures. Very recently (in human terms) we started putting frames around paintings, and even more recently we displayed them in galleries. Those very galleries have become for some cathedrals of the modern age. For others they are strange places, which are as likely to show up one's ignorance as much as anything else.

I love art. It has taken me into unimaginable worlds and fed my spirit. It has expanded my understanding of myself and of humankind. In recent years it is a place where God has met with me.

During this relaxed day, we will take some of the mystery out of art and come to enjoy it more. We will discover ways of hearing what paintings have to say, and even encounter God in works of art. By the end of the day, you will know a bit more about art as well as knowing what you like!

No previous knowledge or experience of art is necessary.

Kevin Scott is a recently-retired Anglican Priest. He has studied Art History since his teens and majored in Philosophy of Art at degree level. His continuing interest is in the role of art in spirituality.
